Russia 56, Fairlawn 48

RUSSIA — Russia got a big win for new head coach Spencer Cordonnier Friday night in County basketball, beating visiting Fairlawn 56-48 Friday night.

The Raiders are back in action tonight at St. Henry. Fairlawn visits Triad tonight.

Fairlawn’s Logan DeMarcus nailed a three-pointer to give the Jets a 36-34 lead early in the final period, but the Raiders came back and scored the next four to take a 38-36 lead. The Raiders had a chance to increase the lead but missed the front end of a one-and-one.

However, the Jets turned the ball over at the other end and Cole Tebbe worked inside for a bucket and a 40-36 advantage.

But the Jets’ Nathan Lessing converted a three-point play to make it 40-39 at the five-minute mark.

Later in the period, Jake Gariety hit one free throw and Lessing rebounded, but he turned the ball over. Gariety was fouled again and canned one of two to make it 52-48, then the Jets again turned the ball over at the other end with just 23 seconds left and the Raiders pulled away.

York had a huge game, finishing with 29 points for the Raiders. Jake Gariety added 12 for the Raiders.

Lessing finished with 16, but didn’t get untracked until the final quarter, when he scored nine of his points.

“Josh just played spectacular,” said Cordonnier. “I told the kids, just throw the ball up there where he can get it. And I really have to say something about Trevor Monnin. He did a phenomenal job on Lessing.”
