VHS grad Brandt is top-ranked in D-2 wrestling

Versailles High School graduate Joe Brandt, who now wrestles for Ashland University, is the top-ranked wrestler at 197 pounds in the latest Division 2 Wrestling Coaches Association rankings, released Wednesday.

Brandt is currently 7-2 with 17 takedowns and a pin so far this season.

In Super Region 2, Brandt is also the top-ranked 197-pounder.

As a team, Ashland is ranked 19th in D-2.

Ryan Bruns, Marion Local — Bruns is making quite an impact for Findlay as a freshman on the basketball team. A 6-foot-7 center, Bruns is averaging 11.2 points per game while shooting 48 percent from the field and 90 percent on 17-for-19 from the free throw line. He also leads the team in blocks.

He had 20 points and was 10-for-12 from the field in a win over Defiance, 10 points on 5-for-7 from the field in a win over Keystone, 14 points on 6-for-7 from the field and 12 rebounds in a two-point win over Alma (Michigan), and 12 points, nine rebounds and three blocks in a win over Otterbein.

Erica Huber, Anna — Huber had a big week in basketball at Ursuline College. She poured in 25 points in a win over Wilberforce, hitting 8-for-15 from the field and 6-for-6 from the line. She followed that up with 17 points on 6-for-10 from the field and 3-for-4 from the line in a win over Notre Dame College.

She is averaging 18.8 points and 4.5 rebounds per game and is hitting 49 percent from the field and 81 percent from the line.

Carson Manger, New Bremen — Manger is also making an impact as a freshman, at Lake Superior State. In action this week against Findlay, he had 17 points on 5-for-8 shooting from three-point range. He is averaging 11.6 points per game so far.

Haley Horstman, New Knoxville — Horstman had an excellent week in women’s basketball at Findlay. She had 17 points, five rebounds and was 4-for-4 from the line against Missouri-St. Louis and 14 points and three assists against Lake Superior State.

Konner Harris, Sidney — Harris had a good week in women’s basketball at Chicago State. She had 16 points, five assists, four rebounds and was 4-for-8 from behind the three-point line in a 75-71 win over Morehead State, and 13 points in a 66-60 loss to Bradley.

Trey Elchert, Jackson Center — Elchert hit his only shot, a three-pointer, and also dished out seven assists for Bluffton in a win over Kalamazoo this week.

Andrea Thobe, Lehman — Thobe and her Wheeling Jesuit teammates were victorious over Winston-Salem State in the NCAA D-2 Atlantic Region volleyball tournament, and she finished with a double-double of 35 assists and 10 digs.

Jessica Thobe, Lehman — Thobe also plays at Wheeling and had 13 digs and three aces in the tournament win.
