Jackets hand Wapak first loss

WAPAKONETA — Sidney dominated the final period to come away with a 63-54 victory over a good Wapakoneta team in non-league boys basketball action Tuesday night at Wapak.

The Jackets move to 6-1 on the season heading into action Friday night at Piqua. The loss was Wapakoneta’s first in four games so far.

Freshman standout Andre Gordon sparked the strong fourth-quarter for the Jackets when he came up with a steal and a slam dunk to break a 45-45 deadlock.

After Wapak missed at the other end, Cameron Gallimore drained a three-pointer for a 50-45 lead.

Another Gallimore three gave the Jackets a 53-48 lead.

Gordon hit a free throw to make it 60-54, then Lorenzo Taborn hit three free throws in two trips to the line to make it 63-54.

Taborn led the Jackets in scoring with 21, including nine in the final period. He was 5-for-7 from the line.

Gordon had 16, all in the final three periods, and Gallimore finished with 12.

NK 51, Botkins 44

NEW KNOXVILLE — Botkins cut a 14-point deficit after three quarters down to just two, and had a couple of possessions to tie or take the lead. But it didn’t happen and the New Knoxville Rangers went on to hand the Trojans a 51-44 setback in non-league action Tuesday night.

Botkins is now 4-4 heading into a game Saturday at Newton. New Knoxville, 2-3, is at St. Henry Friday and at Spencerville Saturday.

Botkins was held to just three points in the third quarter and that resulted in a 40-26 deficit after three periods. But the Trojans stormed back to within two at 41-39 on two Chad Bergman free throws with still 3:30 remaining.

But a couple of missed free throws and a couple of key turnovers allowed New Knoxville to rebuild the lead and get away with the win.

The Rangers had three in double figures, led by Logan Leffel with 17. Nathan Tinnerman added 11, Zach Neumann had 10 and Nick Topp added nine.

The Trojans were led by Chad Bergman with 14. Cameron Flora had 12 and Erik Greve 10.

Houston 53, Ansonia 42

HOUSTON — The Houston Wildcats upped their record to 2-4 with a 53-42 non-league victory over visiting Newton Tuesday night.

The Wildcats return to action Friday at Russia.

The Wildcats trailed 16-13 after a quarter but outscored the Tigers 18-5 to take a 31-21 lead at the half. It was 45-25 after three periods.

Zach Freytag had 19 points to lead Houston, Domyneik Phipps hit three threes and finished with 14 and Zach Jolly added 10.

Loramie 49, Lehman 29

SIDNEY _ Lehman struggled on offense all night and Fort Loramie took advantage, whipping the Cavaliers 49-29 in non-league action at Lehman.

Loramie is now 4-3 heading to Anna Friday. The Cavs are 1-2 and host Waynesfield Friday.

Loramie led 12-5 after a quarter and stretched it to 26-10 at the half.

Drew Wehrman led the Redskins with 13 and Tyler Siegel added 11.
