Trey Werntz shoots 96 at districts

Sidney junior Trey Werntz shot a 96 at the Division I district tournament on Thursday at Beavercreek Golf Club and missed qualifying for state.

“He struggled on the first two holes, but then he settled down,” Sidney coach Bill Rippey said. “He was hitting some really good shots and he didn’t allow the quick greens to get to him. He nearly eagled a hole from 140 yards out, which ultimately lead to a birdie.”

It was Werntz’s first season playing competitive golf, and Rippey said Thursday’s district tournament was an eye-opening experience.

“I was really proud of him and I have enjoyed seeing him grow throughout the season,” Rippey said. “Next year should be really fun for the Sidney golf team!”
