Saturday roundup: Fort Loramie boys, girls sweep SCAL races

RUSSIA — Fort Loramie’s boys and girls cross country squads both won Shelby County Athletic League titles on Saturday, while Joe Ballas and Olivia Borchers each won individual titles and are the league’s runners of the year.

Fort Loramie’s boys squad finished first with 29 points, while Anna was second with 61. Houston finished third, Botkins finished fourth, Russia finished fifth, Fairlawn was sixth and Jackson Center was seventh.

The top 14 runners in the County meet earn all-SCAL honors. The top seven finishers are first team, and the next seven finishers are second team. The winners are named SCAL runners of the year.

Ballas won the race in 16:04.2, besting teammate Jake Rethman by three seconds. Both are seniors. Rethman had won the SCAL boys title each of the last three years and also won middle school titles in 2013 and 2014.

The rest of Fort Loramie’s boys top five runners included Colten Gasson, 5, 16:45.0; Colin Gasson, 9, 17:10.1; and Gavin Schulze, 12, 17:35.2.

Anna’s top five runners included Lucas Smith, 3, 16:17.1; Jacob Robinson, 6, 16:45.7; Colton Nanik, 15, 17:38.9, Hayden Schmidt, 18, 17:57.4; and Nick Fry, 19, 17:59.0.

Houston’s top five included Tristin Freistuhler, 4, 16:41.5; Ethan Knouff, 7, 5:28.6; Blake Jacobs, 10, 17:12.9; Patrick Meiring, 26, 18:18.7; and Ryan Ely, 35, 18:45.6.

Botkins’ top five included Alan Fullenkamp, 8, 17:03.0; Collin Watterson, 11, 17:21.0; Elliot Goubeaux, 13, 17:37.8; Donovan Brown, 24, 18:05.6; and R.J. Poeppelman, 30, 18:21.3.

Russia’s top five included Gavin George, 14, 17:38.3; Nicholas Caldwell, 16, 17:50.3; Andrew DeLoye, 17, 17:53.7; Jonathan Bell, 23, 18:04.8; and Jacob Goubeaux, 33, 18:31.7.

Fairlawn’s top five included Dominic Davis, 22, 18:02.0; Jonah Brautigam, 25, 18:16.9; Isaac Ambos, 39, 18:58.1; Jordan Henman, 63, 20:18.5; and Cade Allison, 66, 20:31.1.

Jackson Center’s top five included Christopher Elchert, 28, 18:20.3; T.J. Esser, 34, 18:34.9; Grant Lowry, 40, 18:58.4; Elisa Burch, 53, 19:47.3; and Ethan Pohlschneider, 55, 19:51.8.

Borchers, a freshman, won the girls race in 18:51.4, over a minute faster than second-place Ava Knouff, who finished in 19:59.9. Knouff is a freshman at Houston.

Fort Loramie finished first with 34 points, while Russia was second with 49. Botkins finished third, Houston finished fourth, Anna was fifth and Jackson Center was sixth. Fairlawn had two runners compete individually.

The rest of Fort Loramie’s top five girls runners included Dani Eilerman, 4, 20:15.3; Caitlyn Gasson, 8, 20:33.3; Claire Rethman, 9, 20:36.0; and Anna Detrick, 12, 20:50.2; and Corynn Heitkamp, 13, 20:59.5.

Russia’s top five runners included Becca Seger, 3, 20:06.0; Ella Hoehne, 5, 20:20.1; Claire Meyer, 6, 20:21.7; Anna Fiessinger, 16, 21:13.7; and Emma DeLaet, 23, 21:59.0.

Botkins’ top five included Emma Koenig, 10, 20:38.8; Kelsie Burmeister, 15, 21:09.5; Makenna Maurer, 19, 21:38.8; Arica Jutte, 26, 22:08.4; and Liza Aselage, 27, 22:08.9.

Houston’s top five included Ava Knouff, 2, 19:59.9; Hollie Voisard, 7, 20:26.1; Katrina Meiring, 31, 22:30.3; Danielle Stephenson, 32, 22:36.7; and Libby Knapke, 37, 22:54.2.

Anna’s top five included Kaylie Kipp, 11, 20:49.6; Kayleigh Kneer, 20, 21:37.4; Kayli Brewer, 24, 22:04.0; Bethany Althauser, 28, 22:19.1; and Hope Bixler, 33, 22:37.2.

Jackson Center’s top six included Deanna Lowry, 35, 22:44.8; Ariana Gross, 56, 25:32.9; Jasci Baum, 59, 26:02.6, Jesci Baum, 62, 27:07.5; and Lennon Wise, 65, 20:21.5.

Minster boys, girls sweep MAC meet

Minster’s boys and girls squad swept the Midwest Athletic Conference meet on Saturday in Coldwater, and both Alex Albers and Emma Watcke finished first.

Minster’s boys finished first with 32 points. Versailles was third with 86, New Bremen was seventh and New Knoxville was 10th.

Albers won the boys race in 16:48.9, 10 seconds ahead of the second-place runner.

The rest of Minster’s top five included Luke Barga, 4, 17:13.5; Austin Felice, 6, 17:23.3; Jon Albers, 7, 17:24.5; and Aaron Huwer, 14, 17:57.8.

Versailles’ top five included Brooks Blakeley, 5, 17:14.78; Stuart Baltes, 12, 17:47.97; Jack Gehret, 21, 18:48.44; Matt Cromwell, 23, 18:51.53; and Noah Barga, 25, 18:52.22.

New Bremen’s top five included Hunter Waterman, 19, 18:45.5; Landin Boyle, 27, 18:55.4; Micah Condon, 39, 19:24.3; Zach Ashman, 53, 20:04.3; and Luke Davidson, 67, 20:42.2.

New Knoxville’s top five included Jakob Rollins, 62, 20:28.1; Jonah Resor, 73, 20:55.7; Jamiel Bucher, 87, 21:28.4; Jared Osborne, 89, 21:34.6; and Dylan Steinke, 110, 23:26.9.

Minster’s girls finished first with 19 points. Versailles was third, New Bremen was seventh and New Knoxville was 10th.

Watcke finished first in 18:55.9, over 20 seconds faster than teammate Kaitlynn Albers, who was second in 19:26.1.

The rest of Minster’s top five included Mackenzie Bohman, 4, 19:36.1; Gwendolyn Meiring, 5, 19:46.3; and Madelin Magoto, 7, 20:00.9.

Versailles’ top five included Madelyn Holzapfel, 13, 20:38.72; Liz Watren, 15, 20:53.18; Maria Mangen, 19, 21:04.03; Kara Spitzer, 23, 21:27.78; and Lauren Menke, 33, 22:00.6.

New Bremen’s top five included Alayna Thieman, 22, 21:19.2; Andrea Heitkamp, 26, 21:44.6; Tess Lane, 45, 22:19.5; Carson Wyatt, 48, 22:22.3; and Hanna Tenkman, 50, 22:32.9.

New Knoxville’s top five included Abigail Sniegowski, 90, 24:26.8; Rebecca Leffel, 91, 24:29.9; Lola Thompson, 113, 26:09.6; Lauren Blitch, 129, 27:04.6; and Dakota Kennedy, 131, 27:39.5.

Sidney competes at GWOC meet

Sidney’s boys and girls cross country squads competed at the Greater Western Ohio Conference meet on Saturday. The boys finished 13th out of 19 teams and the girls finished 12th out of 17 teams.

Out of the six GWOC North schools, both the boys and girls were fifth out of six schools.

Gavin Bockrath was Sidney’s best boys finisher. He was fourth in the American Division race in 16:43.3. The rest of the top five included Ian Bonifas, 8, 17:01.5; Eli Straman, 21, 17:58.9; Grant Hoying, 44, 19:31.7; and Vincent Ruiz, 52, 20:18.5.

Mariana Kellner was Sidney’s best girls finisher. She was 19th in the American Division race in 21:21.7. The rest of the top five included Nicole Siegel, 25, 22:45.5; Montana Stephens, 29, 23:13.1; Sage Steinke, 31, 23:36.6; and Camryn Smith, 35, 24:13.6.

Boys golf

Minster 8th, Fort Loramie 12th at state meet

Minster’s boys golf team finished eighth and Fort Loramie’s finished 12th out of 12 schools in the Division III state golf meet on Friday and Saturday at Northstar Golf Club in Sunbury.

The Wildcats shot a combined 722 in 18-hole rounds on Friday and Saturday, while Fort Loramie shot 761. Columbus Wellington School was first with 610.

Minster’s Joseph Magoto finished 24-over par at 168 for the two rounds, which tied him for 20th. Grant Koenig shot 178, Logan Lazier shot 189 and Grant Voisard shot 190.

Fort Loramie’s Zach Pleiman shot 186, Eli Rosengarten shot 190, Caeleb Meyer shot 191 and Mitchell Puthoff shot 194.

Girls volleyball

Fairlawn 3, Tri-Village 0

Fairlawn finished regular season play with a 25-11, 25-20, 25-12 win over Tri-Village at home on Saturday.

Lauren Dudgeon led the Jets with 12 kills, seven digs and four blocks. Jessie Abke had seven kills and nine digs, Vaegus Gallimore had 10 kills and 13 digs, MaCalla Huelskamp had 13 digs and three kills, Taylor Lessing had 31 assists and 19 digs and Allison Roush served 28 points and had three digs.

The Jets finish regular season 12-10 — a far improvement over their 4-19 record last season. They’ll open sectional tournament play on Tuesday against Yellow Springs at Covington High School.

“The girls played great and this should carry over into tournament Tuesday night against Yellow Springs,” Fairlawn coach Jodi Hickman said. “The girls are working hard and playing good defense.”

Fort Loramie’s Olivia Borchers runs in the Shelby County Athletic League race on Saturday in Russia. Borchers, a freshman, won the varsity girls race in 18:51.4 and was named the SCAL girls runner of the year.
