Wednesday roundup: Russia cruises to sectional win against Jefferson

TROY — After a 16-6 season, which included sharing the SCAL title by beating one quality opponent after another, Russia found itself at the different end of the spectrum playing No. 27 seed Dayton Jefferson in a Division III sectional tournament opener on Wednesday at Trojan Activities Center.

The No. 2 seed Raiders took care of business in a 25-4, 25-5, 25-11 win over the Broncos.

Russia advances to play No. 25 Dayton Christian at 2 p.m. on Saturday in Troy.

“It is (tough for the players to keep their focus),” Russia coach Aaron Watkins said. “You just try to do some different things. Run some different sets, do some different things. Work on some things.”

And Russia did a good job of that through the first two sets — but Watkins felt the Raiders could have been a little sharper in the third set.

“We put our JV girls in,” Watkins said. “Maybe there were some nerves — maybe a little loss of focus.”

And you can’t blame the Raiders for looking ahead.

“Definitely,” Watkins said. “We want to be in the regionals competing for a spot in the state tournament. And this is the start of that.”

Laurissa Poling pounded nine kills and had two aces, while Morgan Wenrick had five kills and five aces and Ashley Scott had five kills and four aces. Jess York added four kills and Jenna Cordonnier served five aces and dished out 15 assists.

Fort Loramie 3, Bradford 0

The Redskins beat Bradford 25-5, 25-11, 25-14 in a first-round Div. IV sectional match on Wednesday in Covington.

No statistics were reported.
