Saturday roundup: Anna wins 4th consecutive district title

CLAYTON — Anna won its fourth consecutive Division III district title on Saturday at Northmont’s Thunderdome by beating Cincinnati Madeira 25-17, 25-16, 25-18.

Anna coach Kelli Zumberger said it’s a good legacy for the team’s five seniors, which include all-Shelby County Athletic League selections Emma Meyer and Lexi Wells.

“This senior class has really brought the team a long way,” Zumberger said. “The past three years we’ve had some of them playing, and they know what it’s like to be at regionals and what the atmosphere is like. They’ve done a good job of praising our underclassmen and building them up for this moment. Each and every one of them brings such good energy for our team.”

Now the Rockets (18-8) will try to do what they haven’t in the last four years: win a regional match. They’ll get their chance in a regional semifinal on Thursday at Trent Arena in Kettering against Marion Pleasant.

“We’ll need a lot of discipline,” Zumberger said. “There were a couple of times today that we were out-of-system a little bit. I think the next few days here at practice, we’ll focus on staying disciplined. It’s just one game, one set, one point at a time.”

Meyer led Anna with 11 kills on Saturday while Sierra Williams and Lauren Barhorst each had seven. Wells had 31 assists while Abby Counts had nine digs and Mary Landis had eight.

“Madeira had a good front line and their blocking was pretty solid, but our girls did a good job of just seeing open shots on the court and responding to that big block,” Zumberger said.

The Tigers earned their sixth consecutive Div. III district championship on Saturday at Northmont’s Thunderdome. Versailles lost the first set 26-24 but won the next three 25-18, 25-23 and 25-17 to claim the match.

Versailles advances to face Miami East in a regional semifinal on Thursday at Trent Arena in Kettering.
