Boerger powers Loramie over Versailles

VERSAILLES — Fort Loramie and defending County Player of the Year Jessica Boerger proved to be too much for the Versailes Lady Tigers in non-league girls basketball action Saturday, the Lady Redskins pulling out a 43-39 thriller for their third consecutive victory.

The win put Loramie at 7-2 on the year with Houston coming to town on Thursday in County play.

Versailles saw its five-game winning streak snapped, leaving the Lady Tigers at 9-5 going into a league game at St. Henry Thursday.

Fort Loramie started the game shooting well, hitting six of their first eight shots to lead 14-11 after one. Boerger had eight in the opening quarter.

Versailles cut a point off the lead in the second quarter, then outscored Loramie 7-4 in a low-scoring third quarter to lead 30-29 going to the final period.

But Boerger came up big down the stretch, scoring nine of her points, including 5 for 6 from the line.

She finished with 25 points on 8 for 16 from the floor and 9 for 10 from the foul line. She also grabbed seven rebounds and had four steals, two blocked shots and two assists.

Versailles was led by 6-foot-2 post player Danielle Winner, who had 12 points.

Anna 56, Bellefontaine 31

BELLEFONTAINE — The Anna Lady Rockets were to much for struggling Bellefontaine in non-league girls basketball Saturday, winning 56-31 in action at Bellefontaine.

The win kept the Lady Rockets unbeaten on the season at 10-0 heading into one of their toughest assignments of the season Tuesday at home against the Minster Lady Wildcats.

Bellefontaine falls to 2-10.

“We got off to a slow start because of missing several easy shots in the first half,” said Anna coach Doug Martin. “But we settled down in the second half and played well.”

Anna led 15-12 after one and opened it up to 27-17 at the half.

Three Lady Rockets went for double figures, with Macey Huelskamp leading the way with 15. Avery Bensman had 11 and Claire Spicer 10. Bensman and Huelskamp also had eight rebounds each, and Sarah Bettinger and Nicole Barhorst pulled down seven apiece. Barhorst added three assists, two steals and two blocked shots.

Anna was 21 for 59 from the field for 36 percent and held Bellefontaine to just 13 for 51 for 25 percent. The Lady Rockets were excellent at the line, canning 14 for 17. They also outrebounded Bellefontaine 42-32.

Russia 41, Arcanum 36

ARCANUM — The Russia girls won their second in a row, overcoming poor free throw shooting to beat the Arcanum Lady Trojans 41-36 in non-league girls basketball action Saturday.

The Lady Raiders go to 5-6 on the year with the win and will play at Newton Monday.

It was tied up at the half at 20-20 and even though the Lady Raiders scored just five points in the third quarter, they held Arcanum to just two. They then outscored Arcanum 16-14 in the final period to pull out the win.

“We were just 3-for-16 from the foul line,” said Russia coach Tim Hatcher. “Fortunately, our defense was very good in the third quarter. That’s two good wins in a row for us.”

Maria Herron was outstanding for the Lady Trojans, hitting five three-pointers on her way to 23 points for the game. Tiffany Hatcher added nine points.

Minster 47, Celina 43

CELINA — Minster went on the road and came away with a big non-league win, edging Celina 47-43.

The Lady Wildcats go to 8-2 on the season heading into a big challenge Tuesday night at 10-0 Anna.

Celina is now 7-2.

Minster led 27-13 at the half after outscoring Celina 18-3 in the second quarter. But the Lady Wildcats still had to overcome being outpointed 12-4 in the third quarter, and by 10 points in the second half.

Rosie Westerbeck had 14 to lead a balanced Minster attack. LeAnn Huelsman had 12, Courtney Prenger 9 and Hannah Schmitmeyer 8. Huelsman had just three points after three quarters, but scored nine in the final period on two of her three three-pointers and 3 for 4 from the foul line.

Minster was 15-for-37 from the field for 41 percent and was lights out at the line, canning 12 of 14 for 86 percent. The free throws were the difference — Celina had three more field goals but was just 4 for 9 from the line.

New Bremen 55, Botkins 44

BOTKINS — New Bremen won its fourth in a row and snapped Botkins’ three-game winning streak in a 55-44 verdict in non-league girls basketball Saturday.

Bremen led by just two after three periods before outscoring the Lady Trojans 19-10 in the final quarter.

Kayla Heuker and Paige Lane both had 11 for the Lady Trojans. Sarah Bergman and Casey Woodall both had eight rebounds.

For the Lady Cardinals, Paige Jones and Alyse Clune were a two-player wrecking crew, combining for 40 points. Jones had 24 points and nine rebounds, and Clune hit four three-pointers and was 4 for 4 from the line for 16 points.

Bremen held a big edge in rebounding at 37-21, and 14 of those were on the offensive end.
