Girls basketball: Marissa Meiring named SCAL player of the year

Fort Loramie junior guard Marissa Meiring has been named the Shelby County Athletic League player of the year.

Meiring, who has played on varsity all three years of her prep career and has been a starter the last two, averages 10.9 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.7 steals per game. She’s shooting 50 percent from the field and 73 percent from the free-throw line.

Russia senior forward Laurissa Poling and senior guard Jenna Cordonnier, Fort Loramie sophomore guard Dana Rose and Anna junior center Lauren Barhorst round out all-SCAL first team.

Barhorst, who missed of her freshman and sophomore seasons after suffering a knee injury, averages 10.7 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. Rose averages 8.2 points and 4.4 rebounds per game. Poling and Cordonnier are multiple-year varsity players; season statistics for both were not available at press time.

Fort Loramie sophomore forward Kenzie Hoelscher, Anna sophomore guard Ella Doseck, Houston senior forward Jess Monnier, Fairlawn senior forward Lauren Dudgeon and Botkins freshman guard Carmen Heuker were named second team.

Hoelscher is a two-year varsity player and averages 7.1 points, five rebounds and two assists per game. Doseck, who is a two-year starter, averages 7.8 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals per game. Monnier averages 9.4 points, 6.3 rebounds and three blocks per game. Season statistics for Dudgeon and Heuker were not available at press time.

Anna’s Breah Kuck and Kiplyn Rowland, Fairlawn’s MaCalla Huelskamp and Lonna Heath, Fort Loramie’s Kennedi Gephart and Taylor Ratermann and Jackson Center’s Katie Sosby were named honorable mention.

Teams are determined by voting of the league’s head coaches. The leading vote-getter is named player of the year.
