SIDNEY — The Sidney Yellow Jackets steadily pulled away from archrival Piqua and came away with a 78-63 victory in Greater Western Ohio Conference North Division boys basketball action Tuesday night at the high school.

The victory evened the season series with Sidney’s biggest rival — the Indians won the first meeting at Piqua earlier this season in an overtime thriller.

Sidney goes to 5-2 in the North and 14-5 overall after its third win in a row, and they now brace for the division-leading Trotwood Rams, who come to the Sidney gym Friday night with their 15-2 record.

The Indians dip to 3-4 in the league and 9-9 overall and also face a tough test Friday, hosting Greenville.

Sidney led by six after a quarter and seven at the half, then closed the third quarter with a flurry of points to open up a 59-45 cushion heading to the final period.

The last two points of the third quarter came on a slam dunk by freshman Andre Gordon.

Piqua hit a three-pointer off an offensive rebound and Nate Monnin scored on an easy layup on Sidney’s next possession to cut the lead quickly to 59-50 early in the final period.

Gordon hit a couple free throws to stop the bleeding and make it 61-50, but Piqua’s Colton Bachman answered with two of his own to again cut the lead down to nine.

Gordon then hit two more free throws and after a Piqua miss, Cameron Gallimore hit from the from 15 feet to make it 65-52.

The Jackets then pulled away to a 71-55 bulge when Piqua turned the ball over and Gallimore lobbed it close to the basket for Gordon to again finish off with a dunk with under four minutes to play.

The Yellow Jackets finished with outstanding balance in their scoring, with five players finishing in double figures. Andre Gordon led the way with 18 and put on a show at the free throw line, hitting 8 for 8.

Gallimore added 15 points, Isaiah Bowser and Darryl McNeal both had 11 and Lorenzo Taborn finished with 1o. Devan Rogers added seven.

Bachman, Piqua’s high-scoring senior standout, poured in 25 after scoring 33 in the first meeting between the two.
