SIDNEY — For the second time this season, the Sidney Yellow Jackets beat Greenville by one point in the final seconds.

When the two teams met in Greenville a few weeks ago, a layup at the buzzer by Andre Gordon gave the Jackets a 68-67 thriller.

Friday night in the return match at Sidney, senior Darryl McNeal hit one free throw with :04 left, and Greenville’s desperation shot was off the mark, giving the Jackets a 61-60 bounce-back thriller.

The win ends the regular season for the Jackets at 15-7 and they now prepare for their first tournament game Friday night at Vandalia against Tecumseh.

The Jackets trailed after one and also at the half despite a flurry of points that put them up four.

It looked like it was getting away from the Jackets in the third quarter when the Green Wave pulled out to a 33-24 lead. But Sidney went on a 10-0 run to take a 34-33 lead. It was back and forth from that point on, with the Jackets taking a slim 44-43 lead into the final period.

The Jackets led most of the final period but Greenville never drifted too far back. When Mike Gallimore scored for Sidney with :50 remaining, the Jackets went up three, but they then gave up a three-pointer to the Jackets to tie the game up. Both teams had shots in the waning seconds, but it was decided when Greenville fouled McNeal and he cashed in.

Gallimore led the Jackets with 20, and Gordon and Lorenzo Taborn had 12 apiece. Gallimore came up big when the Jackets needed him, scoring 15 of his 20 in the second half and going 5 for 5 from the line.

JACKSON CENTER — Anna made it two straight over state-ranked Jackson Center this season, beating the Tigers in a strange way Friday night at Jackson Center.

The Rockets go to 14-7 overall and play at Covington tonight. Jackson Center let a share of the County title slip away, finishing 9-2 in the league. They are 17-4 overall and play at Riverside tonight.

Anna did not score a single point in the first quarter of the game. In fact, the Rockets didn’t get on the board until 3:44 remained in the second quarter.

But to the Rockets’ credit, their defense kept Jackson Center from getting too far ahead, although it was 11-0 at one point.

The Rockets came storming back and took a 19-17 lead in the second half. Jackson scored six in a row to go up 23-19, but Anna scored the next four to tie.

It was 30-29 with :37 left in the game when Carter Huelskamp dropped in two free throws for the Rockets. After a miss, Cody Flesher added two more, and when Huelskamp hit a pair with 11 seconds left, it made it 36-31 and sealed it.

Anna was 8 for 8 from the line in the final period.

Anna (36) — Frilling 3, Bensman 4, Huelskamp 6, Cathcart 9, Luthman 6, Stephens 5, Flesher 4.
