Local wrestlers advance to districts

CENTERVILLE — Sidney High’s wrestling team competed in the Division 1 Sectional Tournament at Centerville High School, where the participants were trying to finish in the top four to advance on to the district meet this week.

Two Yellow Jackets came out of the meet as district qualifiers, including Allen Tangeman at 138 and Javon Purk at 195. Both finished fourth.

Tangeman started out with a 3-2 decision over Hunter Treeill of Northmont. He then pinned Justin Middlestadt of Troy in 3:52 before getting pinned in the semifinals in 3:07 by eventual winner DJ Whiles of Edgewood.

Tangeman game back with a pin in 4:51 over a West Carrollton wrestler, then lost 6-2 in the match for third.

Purk had byes in the first two rounds, then won on a default in the semifinals. He then lost on an 18-2 technical fall in the championship.

Three other Sidney wrestlers fell just short. Seth Vonderheuvel at 220 and Jac Beatty at 285 were both fifth, and Damian Clason finished sixth at 138 pounds.

The district tournament will be held Friday and Saturday at Fairmont High School in Kettering, with the top four in each weight class advancing on to the state tournament.

Division 3

SIDNEY — A number of other wrestlers advanced on to the Division III district tournament from the Lehman Division 3 sectional over the weekend.

Versailles finished second in the team standings behind Mechanicsburg with 205 points. Lehman was 11th with 47.

Lehman’s lone district qualifier was Wyatt Long (182), who finished fourth. He started out losing on a pin in 5:51 to John Samples of Mechanicsburg, but came back to pin Nolan Hanna of Springfield Catholic in 2:18, Bailey Wallen of Brookville in 3:56, and Chance Chapman of West Milton in 2:22. He then won a 7-3 decision over Daniel Everett of Miami East to reach the match for third/fourth and clinch a district berth. In that one, he was decisioned 4-2 by Nathan Bills of Northwestern.

Teammates Collin Haller at 160 and Brandon Simmons at 145 were both fifth.

The Versailles Tigers advanced nine wrestlers on to the district meet.

Winning for Versailles was Kyle Gigandet (195). Taking second were Corey Dieringer (160), Jonathan Moorman (170) and Jerome Bey (182). Finishing third were Jacob Poling (106) and Tanner Bey (138), and finishing fourth were Preston Platfoot (120), Steven Mangen (126) and Jacob Rismiller (220).

The district tournament will be held Friday and Saturday at Hobart Arena in Troy, with the top four in each weight class advancing on to the state tournament.
