WAPAKONETA — Going up against a team that had already played three times, and that had an outstanding pitcher, was a little too much for the Sidney Lady Jackets Tuesday in a 4-0 loss to the Wapakoneta Lady Redskins in girls softball action Tuesday on the road.

The game was Sidney’s first of the season after having its scheduled opener rained out Monday. Wapak is now 4-0.

Wapak pitcher Fisher pitched a complete-game shutout, allowing Sidney just three hits and striking out 13.

Sidney’s Grace Shell pitched well in a losing effort, scattering six hits and striking out seven.

“We’re a much better team with Grace on the mound,” said Sidney coach Wade New. “She really threw well. She had 15 strikeouts in a scrimmage game, and had seven tonight. And it was against the bottom of the order. In fact, she struck out their No. 4 hitter twice.

“I think our girls were pretty jittery to start the game,” he added. “It was their fourth game but you could tell it was our first. The girls were just a little jumpy, and were not able to get comfortable at the plate. Fisher moves the ball around a lot and she’s pretty overpowering. But we played solid defense. We just faced one of the two or three best pitchers we’ll see all season.”
