CLAYTON — Anna came close but couldn’t pull off a comeback in a 49-48 loss to Springfield Shawnee in a Division III district semifinal on Saturday at Northmont High School’s Thunderdome.

Shawnee led by six points with about two minutes left, but the Rockets pulled within 48-45 with 20 seconds left. McKane Finkenbine split a pair of free throws with 11 seconds left to cut the gap to two, but the Braves split a pair of free throws to push the gap back to three points.

Finkenbine missed a potential game-tying 3, and Grant Albers made a put-back before the buzzer to cut the final gap to one.

Finkenbine, a senior guard who was recently voted Shelby County Athletic League player of the year, led the Rockets with 18 points. Zach Ambos scored 11.

Ambos made a 3 at the first-quarter buzzer to trim Shawnee’s lead to 14-12, but the Braves pushed the advantage to 32-26 at halftime. Anna used a 9-4 scoring edge in the third to cut the gap to one before Shawnee pushed the lead back up to six early in the fourth.

Anna finishes 9-15 overall. The Rockets will lose four seniors to graduation: Finkenbine, Ambos, Albers and Bryce Cobb.
