Weekend track roundup: Anna boys, girls finish 1st in SCAL meet

SIDNEY — Anna’s boys and girls track and field squads earned league titles by finishing first in the Shelby County Athletic League meet at Fairlawn High School.

Most track finals were held on Friday along with some field finals; some field finals and a few track finals were held Wednesday.

Anna’s boys squad finished first by accruing 162 points. The Rockets edged out second-place Fort Loramie, which gathered 156 points.

Anna senior Hayden Schmidt helped the Rockets’ boys squad earn a first-place finish. He finished first in the 3,200-meter run in 9:42, which is a meet record. Schmidt’s time broke the previous record of 9:53, set by Anna’s Brad Koverman in 1996.

Schmidt also finished second in the 1,600 run in 4:26 and third in the 800 run in 2:05.

Fort Loramie junior Frank Rethman also set a meet record. He finished first in the 400 dash in 50.32 to beat the previous record of 50.56, set by Fairlawn’s Alan Asher in 2019.

Anna’s girls squad finished first with 176 points, well ahead of second-place Fort Loramie, which gathered 130.

Anna junior London Reiss helped the girls squad earn the first-place finish. She finished first in the 100-meter hurdles in 15.41, which is a meet record. Her time beat the previous record of 15.50, set by Russia’s Leah Francis in 2015.

Reiss also finished first in the 300 hurdles in 47.79 and third in the 200 dash in 27.51.

Two other girls also set meet records.

Fairlawn sophomore Addison Swearingen finished first in the 100 dash in 12.42, beating the previous record of 12.54 set by Fort Loramie’s Janel Olberding in 2009.

Botkins senior Aleah Johnson finished first in discus with a throw of 148 feet, 8 inches to beat the previous record of 132-10, set by Jackson Center’s Nicole Fogt in 2016.

Aside from Anna and Fort Loramie’s boys teams’ top two finishes, Botkins finished third, Jackson Center finished fourth, Houston finished fifth, Russia finished sixth and Fairlawn finished seventh.

Anna’s Justin Richards finished first in the 100-meter dash, edging teammate Xavier McEldowney, who was second in 11.30. Richards also finished first in the 200 dash in 23.19, edging Rethman, who was second in 23.41.

Houston’s Ethan Davis finished second to Rethman in the 400 dash with a time of 52.14.

Botkins’ Carter Pleiman finished first in the 800-meter run in 2:04.04, while Fort Loramie’s Colin Gasson was second in 2:04.12. Fort Loramie’s Colten Gasson was first the 1,600 in 4:25, about a second ahead of Schmidt. Jackson Center’s Kellen Reichert finished second to Schmidt in the 3,200 in 9:52.

Fort Loramie’s Gavin Kemper finished first in the 110-meter hurdles in 15.76 while Jackson Center’s Lucas Hartle was second in 16.57. Kemper finished first in the 300 hurdles in 42.13 while Anna’s Brandon Axe was second in 43.97.

Anna’s 4×100 relay of Axe, Xavier McEldowney, Ben McDermott and Dalton Wick finished first in 45.86. Botkins’ 4×100 relay of Austin Rogers, Jack Dietz, Brady Steinke and Keegan Thorpe finished second in 47.04.

Anna’s 4×200 relay of Axe, Wick, McEldowney and McDermott finished first in 1:35. Botkins’ 4×200 relay of Steinke, Thorpe, Dietz and Xavier Monnin finished second in 1:37.

Fort Loramie’s 4×400 relay of Colin Gasson, Trey Ranly, Colten Gasson and Rethman finished first in 3:33. Botkins’ 4×400 relay of Monnin, Rogers, Jacob Pleiman and Carter Pleiman was second in 3:40.

Fort Loramie’s 4×800 relay of Colin Gasson, Rethman, Ranly and Colten Gasson finished first in 8:18. Botkins’ 4×800 relay of Carter Pleiman, Parker Schnippel, Monnin and Keaton Schnippel finished second in 8:32.

Fort Loramie’s Ryan Hoelscher finished first in boys high jump by clearing 5 feet, 10 inches while Jackson Center’s Xavier Esser was second in 5-8.

Richards was first in long jump with a leap of 21-5.5 while Kemper was second with a leap of 19-8.25.

Kemper finished first in pole vault by clearing 13-0, while teammate Luke Holthaus was second by clearing 11-6.

Houston’s Ethan Funk was first in discus with a throw of 144-4 while Anna’s Landon Blankenship was second with a throw of 118-2.

Anna’s Eli Wilson was first in shot put with a throw of 43-9.25 while Funk was second with a throw of 42-4.

Aside from Anna and Fort Loramie’s girls squads’ top two finishes, Botkins finished third, Fairlawn finished fourth, Russia finished fifth, Houston finished sixth and Jackson Center finished seventh.

Anna’s Tanner Spangler finished second to Swearingen in the 100-meter dash in 12.79. Swearingen was first in the 200 dash in 26.01 and Russia’s Sophie Francis was second in 27.04. Swearingen was first in the 400 dash in 58.31 while Francis was second in 1:01.

Fort Loramie’s Claire Rethman was first in the 800 run in 2:20 while teammate Mylee Shatto was second in 2:25. Rethman was first in the 1,600 run in 5:14 while Botkins’ Brittany Arnold was second in 5:34. Anna’s Paige Steinke was first in the 3,200 run in 11:43 while Fort Loramie’s Lauren Moore was second in 12:06.

Anna’s Ashley Bertke finished second to Reiss in the 100 hurdles in 16.06. Fort Loramie’s Ariel Heitkamp was second in Reiss in the 300 hurdles in 49.47.

Anna’s 4×100 relay of Spangler, Gabrielle Myers, Ashley Bertke and Kaitlyn Harris was first in 51.42 while Fort Loramie’s 4×100 relay of Alyson Schmitmeyer, Sunni Voisard, Viola Bornhorst and Riley Heitkamp was second in 52.78.

Anna’s 4×200 relay of Spangler, Chelsea McEldowney, Jenna Wolters and Harris was first in 1:50 while Fort Loramie’s 4×200 relay of Voisard, Bornhorst, Ariel Heitkamp and Schmitmeyer was second in 1:52.

Fairlawn’s 4×400 relay of Swearingen, Abby Swearingen, Julianna Clayton and Haley Cox was first in 4:11. Fort Loramie’s 4×400 relay of Harley Eilerman, Heitkamp, Ella Boerger and Claire Rethman was second in 4:16.

Fort Loramie’s 4×800 relay of Mylee Shatto, Lauren Moore, Colleen Borchers and Rethman was first in 9:58 while Anna’s 4×800 relay of Bethany Althauser, Grace Bensman, Abbie McEldowney and Kayli Brewer was fourth in 10:33.

Anna’s Ashley Bertke was first in high jump by clearing 5-4 while Fort Loramie’s Riley Heitkamp was second by clearing 5-2. Bertke was second in long jump with a leap of 16-10.5 while Anna’s Lauryn Wolters was second with a leap of 16-9.

Heitkamp finished first in pole vault by clearing 10-0 while Russia’s Mackenzie Rose was second by clearing 9-6.

Anna’s Lenna Rowland finished second to Johnson in discus with a throw of 141-2. Johnson finished first in shot put with a throw of 37-8.75 while Anna’s Sydney Klosterman was second with a throw of 35-3.75.

Athletes of the year and all-SCAL honors

Fort Loramie’s Gavin Kemper was named the SCAL boys athlete of the year while Fairlawn’s Addison Swearingen was named girls athlete of the year.

Each athlete who earned a first-place finish in the league meet earned all-SCAL honors.

Lehman Catholic girls win inaugural Three Rivers Conference title

Lehman Catholic’s girls track and field squad earned a conference title at the inaugural Three Rivers Conference meet, which took place on Thursday and Saturday at Dayton Northridge.

Kiersten Franklin led Lehman. She won the 100-meter dash in 12.43, the 200 dash in 25.90 and 400 dash in 58.92.

Katie McFarland finished first in pole vault by clearing 10-7.

The 4×100 relay finished first in 52.79 while the 4×200 relay finished first in 1:49.04 and the 4×400 relay finished first in 4:17.55.

McFarland finished second in the 100 dash in 13.19. Mara O’Leary was second in the 100 hurdles in 18.08 and second in the 300 hurdles in 50.60.

Agnes Schmiesing was second in the 800 run in 2:39 while Eva Dexter was second in the 1,600 run in 5:51.

Caroline Wesner finished second in long jump with a leap of 15-4.

Riverside’s girls squad finished eighth. Cassie May finished second in high jump with a leap of 4-8.

Lehman’s boys squad finished fourth.

Michael McFarland finished first in discus with a throw of 165-1 and took third in shot put with a throw 44-6.

Jude Schmiesing finished third in the 400 dash in 53.92. Thomas Schmiesing finished third in the 800 run in 2:08.03.

The 400 relay finished third in 45.51, the 1,600 relay finished third in 3:38 and the 3,200 relay finished third in 9:02.39.

Riverside’s boys finished eighth. Tyler Knight finished third in the 300 hurdles in 45.02.

Minster girls 1st, boys 2nd in MAC meet

Minster’s girls squad finished first in the Midwest Athletic Conference meet while the boys squad finished second. The meet was held on Tuesday and Friday at Minster Memorial Field.

The girls finished first with 130 points, 15 ahead of second-place Coldwater.

Minster’s Margaret Hemmelgarn finished first in the 1,600-meter run in 5:14 and in the 3,200 run in 12:03. Taylor Roth finished first in the 800 run in 2:18.

The 4×800 relay finished first in 9:50.

The 4×200 relay finished second in 1:47 and the 4×400 relay finished second in 4:06.

Chaney Cedarleaf finished second in the 3,200 run in 12:06.

Adriana Kremer and Kayla Lamm finished second in high jump; each cleared 5-0.

Versailles’ girls squad finished third.

Heidi Stammen was the squad’s lone first-place finisher. She won pole vault by clearing 10-6.

Lexi Magoto finished second in the 200 dash in 26.33 and finished second in the 400 dash in 59.13.

Josephine Pothast was third in the 100 hurdles in 16.82.

New Bremen’s girls squad finished sixth.

The 4×800 relay finished second in 10:00. Chloe Homan finished third in the 3,200 run in 12:22.

Minster’s boys squad was second with 141.5 points, 12.5 behind first-place Marion Local.

Alex Albers led the Wildcats. He finished first in the 800-meter run in 2:03, first in the 1,600 run in 4:30 and first in the 3,200 run in 9:55.

The 4×400 relay was first in 3:32 and the 4×800 relay was first in 8:17.

Alex Westerheide finished second in the 800 run in 2:04. Joseph Slonkosky was second in the 300 hurdles in 41.44.

The 4×200 relay was second in 1:32.

Russell Heid finished second in pole vault by clearing 13-0.

Versailles’ boys squad finished third.

Jack Osborne led the Tigers. He finished first in the 100 dash in 11.24, first in the 200 dash in 22.83 and first in the 400 dash in 51.14. He also finished first in long jump with a leap of 20-3.

Taran Tyo finished first in discus with a throw of 175-0 and finished second in shot put with a throw of 55-4.

Colton Reese was second in the 110 hurdles in 15.41.

New Bremen’s boys squad finished sixth.

Zach Wiedeman finished third in the 3,200 run in 10:18. The 4×200 relay was third in 3:37 and the 4×800 relay was third in 8:22.
