Coaches award New $1,000 scholarship

HOUSTON — Houston pitcher Kayla New, who helped lead the Lady Wildcats to a county co-championship and a spot in the regional finals, has been named the recipient of a $1,000 scholarship from the Ohio High School Fastpitch Softball Coaches Association, it was announced recently.

The association awards the scholarship every year to a member coach’s daughter. New is the daughter of Houston head coach Brent New.

To be eligible, the player must be a graduating senior, have earned at least one varsity letter, have demonstrated exemplary citizenship and leadership, and achieved a minimum 3.0 grade point average.

New was Houston’s top pitcher this spring, pitching 113 2/3 innings and finishing with an 11-8 record and a 2.59 earned run average.

She also hit .333, with 25 hits, 18 runs scored and 20 runs batted in.

She plans to attend Wright State University Lake campus in Celina and major in early childhood education.
