SIDNEY — Tawawa Park Runners, Inc. recently announced its scholarship winners for graduating senior runners from the class of 2016.
They are Molly Kearns, a member of the Russia Lady Raider cross country and track teams, and among the boys, Botkins High School’s Cameron Flora and Sidney High School’s Jonathan Perin.
Kearns had an outstanding running career for Russia. She ran at the cross county state meet all four years, with her team garnering a third-place finish during her junior year. She was chosen team captain her senior year and received the Most Valuable Runner award. She has the fifth-fastest 5K time in the history of girls cross country at Russia. And she topped off her season by breaking the school record in the 3200-meters set by former Ohio State runner Katie Borchers.
Flora qualified for the state meet in cross country three years. He also earned academic All-Ohio honors three years straight. He won the County meet in cross country as a sophomore and was county champion in the 3200 in track as a junior.
Perin achieved one of the top-ten fastest 3000-meter times in school history. He broke five minutes in the 1600 on the track and was a sub-11-minute 3200 runner. He also served as the captain of the cross country team.
All three winners had outstanding academic achievements.
Kearns was the class valedictorian. Perin earned a 4.0 GPA and finished in the top ten of his class. And Flora scored a 3.75 GPA.
All of the scholarship winners will be attending college. Kearns will run cross country and track at Wright State University.
The Tawawa Park Runners, Inc. is composed of a local group of runners who incorporated in 1999. The Tawawa Park Runners hold an annual scholarship 5K run in the park each year to raise scholarship monies. The race this year is set for Saturday, August 6 at 8 a.m.
