Diamondbacksbeat Reds in 10

PHOENIX (AP) — The Arizona Diamondbacks waited for the umpires to sort out a wild ending after baserunning follies on the final play, and wound up beating the Cincinnati Reds 4-3 in 10 innings Sunday.

Arizona loaded the bases with one out in the 10th and Chris Owings lined a ball over center fielder Billy Hamilton’s head.

As the Diamondbacks celebrated in the middle of the diamond, the Reds retrieved the ball — a stadium worker tossed it back — and began tagging the bases. The Reds claimed Arizona runners didn’t properly advance to touch the bags before leaving the field, and should be called out on force plays.

The umpires discussed the play for a couple of minutes and ruled the game was over.

Arizona took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on Paul Goldschmidt’s double, but the Reds came back to take a 2-1 lead in the fourth. Billy Hamilton hit a ground-rule double to left, and after Brandon Phillips struck out, Joey Votto walked. Marlon Byrd then singled Hamilton home. Votto scored on a fielder’s choice.

The Diamondbacks scored twice in the fifth to retake the lead on three straight hits after two were out. But the Reds knotted the score in the seventh when Suarez and Ivan De Jesus hit back-to-back doubles.

The Reds went out 1-2-3 in both the ninth and 10th innings, and the D-backs won it in the bottom of the 10th off Ryan Mattheus, who gave up a single and two walks ahead of Chris Owings’ long single to center.
