DEGRAFF — The Riverside boys hosted Bradford Tuesday in non-league basketball and got their first win of the season by a 43-35 final at Riverside.

The Pirates are back in action Friday at home against Fairlawn in non-league play.

The Pirates fell behind 13-8 after a quarter, but tied it by the half at 20-20. Bradford led by one after three quarters, but the Pirates rallied to outscore the visitors 17-8 in the final period.

“This was a pretty physical game,” said Riverside coach Seth Bodenmiller. “Bradford came out and punched us in the mouth and it took us a while to respond. Fortunately, we were able to make some plays down the stretch which really fueled our defense. Trey Helmlinger had a big steal that he converted into a three-point play. From there, we started making free throws which sealed the win for us.”

Helmlinger led the Pirates in scoring with 12 and Kyle Knight added 10. Helmlinger also had eight rebounds and Knight six. Tyler Sanford had eight points and three assists.

The Pirates survived despite not shooting the ball well. They were 16 for 46 for 35 percent on the night.

The Riverside junior varsity won 64-32, with Trae Wilgus scoring 16 and Trevor Young 14.
