VANDALIA — The Sidney High wrestling team competed in a double-dual match at Vandalia-Butler Thursday night.

The Jackets lost to Vandalia 57-22, then were defeated by Dayton Stebbins 42-36.

“We had some injuries so we had four holes in the lineup,” said head coach Clayton Westerbeck. “But there were some bright spots.”

He pointed to sophomore Alex Ham at 152 as one of them.

“Alex wrestled with some incredible heart in going 2-0 with two pins,” Westerbeck said. “He was behind and came back in both matches.”

In addition, Javon Purk won both his matches via pin and is now 7-0 this season with all seven wins coming on pins.

Against Vandalia, Kyler Pleasant at 145 won a major decision, 17-6, and Ham pinned in 4:30 at 152. Purk pinned in 3:56 at 220, and Sidney won by forfeit at 285.

The Jackets forfeited at 106, 120, 138 and 182. Of the remaining six matches won on the mat by Vandalia, five ended in pins and one on a 9-8 decision by Mason Motter over Sidney’s Seth Wallace.

• Against Stebbins, Sidney won five times on the mat and also got another forfeit at 285.

Ham pinned in 2:30 at 152, and Wallace followed with a pin in 3:40 at 160. JC Voorhies then pinned in just 1:12 at 170 pounds.

At 195, Sidney’s Jordan Marvin pinned in 1:01, and at 220, Purk made quick work of his opponent, pinning him in just 53 seconds.

The Jackets are back in action Saturday in the Sparta Highland High School Invitational.

• The annual Jim McCracken Duals were held at Sidney Middle School last weekend, and Purk put on quite a display in winning the 220-pound class.

He won five matches, all by pin, in 1:28, 3:20, 32 seconds, 33 seconds, and 1:11 in the finals.

Seth Wallace at 160 finished fourth. He won his first two matches by pin in 1:58 and 50 seconds, then won a 2-0 decision before losing.

Versailles also competed in the meet.

Jacob Poling at 120 finished second, winning his first four matches before losing on a tech-fall in the finals.

Tanner Bey was second at 145. He won his first three matches by pin and then won 13-9 in the semifinals before being pinned in 5:05 in the championship.

Jonathan Moorman was second at 170 pounds. He pinned twice, won a 15-5 major decision and also won 3-2 in the semifinals. He then lost 5-2 in the finals.

Also for Versailles, Cael Bey was third at 106, Nick Monnier fourth at 113, Steven Mangen third at 132, Kyle Wuebker fourth at 138, Derek Cavin third at 152, Jerome Bey third at 182, Jacob Rismiller third at 195, Isaac Grilliot fourth at 220, and Jeffrey Ware third at 285.
