Staff report

Sidney let a big second-half lead get away, but the Jackets did what they had to do down the stretch to win 80-73 over the Tipp City Red Devils in Greater Western Ohio Conference American North action Friday night at Sidney.

The Jackets are now 2-0 and host Wapakoneta tonight.

Sophomore standout Andre Gordon finished with 31 on the heels of his 30 Tuesday night against Bellefontaine. He was one of four in double figures, with Isaiah Bowser and Ratez Roberts getting 16 apiece and Devan Rogers adding 11, seven of those coming in the opening quarter.

Sidney got off to a big lead in the opening quarter behind Rogers, only to see Tipp City hit a couple of three-pointers late in the quarter to cut what was an 11-point lead at one point to 19-12 after one quarter.

Tipp cut the lead to five early in the second quarter, but five straight points by Gordon pushed the lead back to double digits at 28-18 midway through the second quarter. And with Gordon continuing to score, the lead reached 16 with under two minutes to go in the half.

When the first half ended, the Jackets led 40-23, and had excellent balance. Gordon had 12 at the break and both Rogers and Roberts had nine apiece.

The Jackets didn’t let up in the third quarter, either, rolling to a 61-42 lead after three periods. At one point, Gordon reeled off seven straight points to up his game total to 22.

But Tipp City wasn’t through yet, and a 9-2 run cut the lead to 63-51 with still over six minutes to play.

With the clock nearing a minute and Sidney struggling at the line, Tipp got a layup and a three-pointer to cut the lead to 76-70, but the Jackets hit enough free throws in the final minute to put it away, despite the Red Devils scoring 31 points in the fourth quarter.

Gordon had just two points in the opening quarter before getting untrack. He was sent to the line 19 times by the Red Devils and hit 12 of them.

For the game, Sidney was 25 for 35 from the line.
