The Sidney High wrestling team competed in The Kilted Classic at Sparta Highland High School on Saturday and placed ninth out of 17 teams.
Medina was the tournament champion and Westerville North the runner-up.
“Overall, it was a good team effort,” said coach Clayton Westerbeck of Sidney. “We wrestled hard and intense, and it was a great experience for our young wrestlers and solid competition for our veterans.”
Javon Purk continued his outstanding season at 220 pounds, going 5-0 in the tournament to raise his record on the season to 12-0, with 11 pins. Four of those pins came on Saturday.
He defeated Brandon Myers of Mansfield Senior, who was ranked No. 4 in Ohio in Division 1, on a 7-5 decision, and pinned both 13th-ranked Aaron Kupferberg of Findlay and 15th-ranked Mason Hay of Westerville North.
Purk was ranked 12th going into the tournament.
Five other Sidney wrestlers had two pins each in the competition, including Caleb Schroer at 113, Alex Ham at 152, JC Voorhies at 170, Josh Walker at 195, and Greg Spencer at 285.
The Jackets will return to action next Tuesday in a tri-match at Indian Lake.
