Bremen girls win thrillerin D-4 tournament action

LIMA — New Bremen’s Hanna Tenkman hit a jumper with just over two seconds remaining to give the Lady Cardinals a 40-38 thriller over Waynesfield-Goshen in the first round of the Division 4 District Basketball Tournament in action at Lima Bath Wednesday.

The win puts the Lady Cardinals into the quarterfinals on Saturday at 8 p.m. against Lima Catholic. Bremen takes a 12-11 record into that game.

The Lady Cardinals let a seven-point lead after three quarters disappear, and looked to be in dire shape when they were called for a foul with the score tied and just 10 seconds remaining.

But the Waynesfield shooter missed the free throw, setting up Tenkman’s big shot to win it.

Jane Homan had 15 to lead New Bremen and Kayla Bergman added 12, seven of those coming in the opening quarter.

New Bremen (50) — Puthoff 2, Tenkman 8, Arling 2, Naylor 6, Brown 5, Bergman 12, Homan 15.

Waynesfield (48) — Buffenbarger 9, Barrington 4, Lowe 3, Wilker 14, Craig 11, Biederman 7.
