Staff report

Sidney pushed a run across in the bottom of the ninth inning to edge Wayne 4-3 and earn a split of a well-played doubleheader in high school baseball action at Sidney High School on Saturday.

The twin bill marked the season opener for both squads, so both are now 1-1.

Wayne held Sidney scoreless until the bottom of the ninth inning in the first game. The Jackets scored twice, but came up a run short in a 3-2 verdict.

Sidney managed just three hits, singles by Dillon King, Cole Hofmann and Conor Beer.

Beer was the tough-luck loser, going the first six innings and allowing five hits and all three runs. But only one was earned.

“I thought Conor pitched well enough to win this game,” said Sidney coach Thomas Goffena. “We did not come to play on offense, and had some untimely errors. Unfortunately Wayne took advantage of those mistakes and scored three runs. We scored late to make it close but came up just short.”

The Jackets managed just three hits off Wayne ace Wynkoop, who struck out 10.

In the second game, Sidney led 3-1 after scoring twice in the bottom of the sixth. But Wayne rallied with two in the seventh to tie it up.

It went to the ninth, and with Luke Rees on second, King drove a liner to right center and plated the winning run easily.

“We came up with some big hits to reward our pitching, which was good all day,” Goffena said. “We got strikes in this game from all three pitchers and I am very proud of the way they handled themselves. Dylan Smith got out of a big jam in his first inning then came back with two more big scoreless innings to keep us tied. We had some mental errors in this game that kept them in it, but at the end of the day we got the last big hit. Any time you can get a walkoff win in extra innings, it is exciting no matter who the other team is.”

The Jackets went from just three hits in the first game, to 12 in the second, led by Hofmann, who was 3-for-4 and drove in two runs.

Austin McLain singled and doubled in five trips, King had two hits and Kaden Walker two hits. King also stole two bases.

Sidney will be back in action today at Tecumseh.
