Hoping for ‘a window’

HOUSTON — Houston head softball coach Brent New is holding out hope that there will be a window of dry weather that will allow the annual Houston Showcase to go on as scheduled today (Friday) and Saturday on two diamonds at Houston.

The showcase brings in some of the top teams from inside and outside the area, and this year, that includes a team all the way from Middletown. The list of teams is headed by Parkway, which is the No. 4-ranked team in the state in Division 4, and Wapakoneta, the No. 9-ranked team in Division 2.

New said Thursday that a decision hasn’t been made on the event yet.

“We may cancel Friday’s portion, and still try Saturday,” he said. “Our diamonds can take a lot of water, so if we get any kind of a window, we might get something in.”

There are four games planned for today starting at 4:30 and 6:15, with one on each diamond.

Then on Saturday, nine more games will hopefully be played starting at 10 a.m.

New said that if Friday’s games are rained out, that portion of the Showcase will be canceled, and not affect Saturday’s schedule.

Fans are reminded that there is a $5 admission price, which is good for the entire tournament.
