Hoying hits 10th homer

Fort Loramie native Jared Hoying belted his 10th home run of the season Tuesday night to help the Round Rock Express to a 5-3 come-from-behind win over New Orleans.

Round Rock is the Texas Rangers’ Class AAA affiliate.

Hoying, who spent 26 games with the Rangers before being sent back down to AAA June 21, is hitting .250 for Round Rock after going 1-for-4 Tuesday night.

Upon rejoining Round Rock, Hoying struggled, with just three hits in his first 21 at-bats. But starting with a game against Nashville on June 28, Hoying went 12-for-26 over a six-game stretch, a .462 average.

He had a single, a double and drove in two runs in that game with Nashville, and the next night was 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored, two RBIs and three walks.

After going 1-for-5 on July 1 against Iowa, he was then 2-for-5 with an RBI in each of his next two games, before going 3-for-4 in a loss to Memphis.

On Monday night, he was 2-for-4 and scored twice in a win over New Orleans.

He started out the season with Round Rock, and his overall average with the club is at .250, with 56 hits in 224 at-bats.

He has 10 home runs, 15 doubles, has scored 34 runs and driven in 37. He has hit safely in 14 of his last 17 games.

During his 26-game stint with the Rangers, Hoying hit .242 with 13 hits in 62 at-bats. He had a home run and drove in six runs.

Craig Stammen

North Star native and Versailles High School grad Craig Stammen continues to pitch well for the San Diego Padres.

He was called on to pitch 22/3 innings in relief on Monday night against the Colorado Rockies and allowed no runs and two hits.

That lowered his earned run average on the season to 4.24 in 32 appearances and 51 innings pitched. He’s allowed 47 strikeouts, 17 walks, 24 earned runs and opponents are hitting just .240 against him.
