Anna, Fort Loramie golf top at SCAL tournament

SIDNEY — Fort Loramie’s boys golf team didn’t have a player finish first team all-Shelby County Athletic League, but it didn’t prevent a first-place finish.

The Redskins finished second in the SCAL tournament on Thursday at Shelby Oaks Golf Course to claim the league’s title for 2017. Though Anna won the tournament with a 339, the Rockets had a 4-2 match play record in regular season and finished second behind Loramie overall at 10-2. The Redskins went 6-0 in match play in regular season and finished 11-1.

Botkins’ Nick Fischio finished first individually in the tournament with a 75. Anna’s Eli Kuck was second with 76. Jackson Center’s Bryce Sosby, Fort Loramie’s Mitchell Puthoff and Russia’s Jack Dapore all had 82, and Sosby won a playoff to finish third.

Puthoff had Loramie’s best score. Shea Swick had an 86, Zach Pleiman had an 88, Eli Rosengarten had an 89, Craig Eilerman had a 96 and Jared Middendorf had a 99. The Redskins had a 345 team score in the tournament.

Mason Platfoot had an 86 for Anna. Evan Bensman had an 87, Isaac Cain had a 90, Bryce Havenar had a 95 and Cole Maurer had a 96.

Jackson Center finished third with a 376. Aside from Sosby, Christopher Elchert had a 96, Trent Platfoot and Coltin Rose had 99, TJ Esser had 107 and Jordan Rizzo had 121.

Russia (384) was fourth, Fairlawn (386) was fifth, Houston (399) was sixth and Botkins (413) was seventh in the tournament.

Will Sherman had a 95 for the Raiders. Drew Sherman had a 99, Evan Coverstone had a 108, Brandon Koverman had a 109 and Christian Stueve had a 118.

Fairlawn was led by Jackson Jones, who had a 90. Luke Hickman had a 95, Doug Wright had a 96, Kyle Peters had a 105, Chester Hughes had a 108 and Skyler Piper had a 112.

Bryan Funk had the low score for Houston with a 91. Cameron Via had a 94, Collin Walker had a 102, Cole Pitchford had a 112, Nathan Stangel had a 115 and Jon Steiner had a 129.

Anthony Opperman had a 104 for Botkins. Alex Bajwa had a 113, Marcus Lee had a 121, Parker Geis had a 123 and Connor Stutsman had a 126.

In full season standings, Jackson Center (9-3) came in third behind Loramie and Anna. Russia (6-6) was fourth, Fairlawn (4-8) was fifth, Houston (2-10) was sixth and Botkins (0-12) was seventh.

Fischio is the league’s player of the year. Joining Fischio on first team are Mason Platfoot, Eli Kuck, Zach Pleiman, Bryce Sosby and Jack Dapore. Mitchell Puthoff, Craig Eilerman, Shea Swick, Eli Rosengarten, Bryan Funk and Isaac Cain are on second team.
