Lehman girls soccer moves into district title match with win over Urbana

FRANKLIN — The rematch is set.

The Lehman Catholic girls soccer team will get a second chance against Anna in a Division III district championship game at 7 p.m. Thursday at Bellefontaine’s AcuSport Stadium.

Lehman Catholic (12-4-1) advanced with a 5-0 win over Urbana Monday night, while Anna (17-0) defeated Brookville 7-0.

Neither team has allowed a goal in the postseason.

In the regular season, Anna beat with a 2-1 win over Lehman.

“We are really looking forward to Thursday’s district final,” Lehman coach Jeremy Lorenzo said. “Of course it’s nice to have an opportunity to avenge a loss from the regular season, but this game is about winning a district championship and nothing else.

“This is what we have been preparing for all season and we are glad its finally here.”

Lehman had to play most of the game against Urbana in a pouring rain, but it did nothing to slow the Cavaliers down.

“I was very proud of how the team responded last night and even more pleased with their focus and determination,” Lorenzo said. “We could have allowed the horrible weather conditions to play a major factor in how we played, but the girls were all business and did not allow it to be an issue.”

Lehman got two early goals, as the Cavaliers footwork was just too quick for the Hillclimbers.

Molly Safreed got the scoring started.

Grace Monnin took a ball from Carly Edwards and made a perfect pass to Safreed, who quickly outmaneuvered several defenders for an open shot, putting it in the back of the net with 29:43 remaining.

A little over five minutes later, Lindsey Magoteaux took a dish from Safreed and rifled it into the back of the net from 30 yards out to make it 2-0 with 24:31 remaining in the half.

With 4:41 left in the half, Rylie McIver scored off a Magoteaux assist to make it 3-0 at the break.

Safreed and Magoteaux each scored a second goal in the second half — with Samathana Edwards and Ava Behr picking up the assists — to make the final 5-0.

Camille Brown recorded the shutout in goal.

“We were not completely sure what we were up against with Urbana,” Lorenzo said. “They are a good team that plays mostly D-I and D-II schools and are fresh off a league championship. To win, it was going to take a complete team effort and that is exactly what we got.”

Now, the Cavaliers will take that into Thursday’s much anticipated district championship match.
