Girls basketball: Sidney beats West Carrollton for first win of season

WEST CARROLLTON — Sidney held on late to earn its first win of the season on Wednesday in a Greater Western Ohio Conference crossover game at West Carrollton.

The Yellow Jackets trailed by a point heading in the fourth but battled back to win 49-46. Sidney improved to 1-9 overall with the win and 1-4 in the GWOC American North Division, while West Carrollton dropped to 0-10 and 0-5 in the American South.

The Yellow Jackets started the fourth quarter on a 12-5 run to take a 44-38 lead with 1:30 left, but the Pirates scored five of the next six points to pull within two. Carly Dean hit two free throws in the final 20 seconds to help Sidney hang on.

Junior guard Alina Kindle led the Yellow Jackets with a season-high 18 points. Kindle, who leads the team with an average of 10.2 points per game, also had two rebounds and two steals on Wednesday.

Dean, a 5-foot-5 sophomore guard, finished with 14 points and led the team with six rebounds. Carrie Nuss scored 12 points and had four steals, four assists and four rebounds. Dean also had four steals.

Sidney shot 17 for 56 (30.4 percent) from the field and 12 for 16 (75 percent) from the free-throw line.

The Yellow Jackets led 6-4 at the end of the first quarter and 24-21 at halftime. West Carrollton used a 12-8 advantage in the third quarter to build a 33-32 lead.

Sidney has another GWOC crossover game on Saturday at home against Xenia (2-8, 1-4 GWOC American South).
