Staff report

Sidney High School senior soccer standout Kaitlyn Davis has been named the Greater Western Ohio Conference North Division Athlete of the Year, it was announced recently by the league.

Davis was counted on mostly for her defense, but also had six goals and two assists this season in leading the Lady Jackets to a 12-5-1 record.

“Kaitlyn is the heart and soul of our team,” said Sidney coach Stacey Goffena. “She is the greatest competitor and natural leader that I have ever coached and she is definitely deserving of this honor.”

Davis was not only first-team all-North, but was also named to the All-GWOC team, which is made up of girls from all three divisions. She was one of just 12 players named to that team.

Sidney had one other player named to the first team in junior Emily Wiesenmayer, who led the Lady Jackets in scoring this season with 12 goals, and also had three assists.

Named to the second team were senior goalie Sylvia Hudson, and two freshmen, including Macie Ivey and Elaine Wiesenmayer.

Hudson had 151 saves this season, Wiesenmayer five goals and Ivey three.

Senior Elizabeth Barr was named to the Special Mention list.

League champion Vandalia had five players named to the All-North first team and one to the second to tie Sidney with six total players named, and runner-up Troy had three on the first team and four on the second.

Boys

Sidney’s first-year head boys soccer coach Daniel Wicks was named the co-North Division Coach of the Year after leading the Jackets to an outstanding season in his initial year.

The Jackets started off with two scoreless ties in their first three games, but got things going in a big way. Included in their final 13-3-2 record was a nine-game winning streak. The 13 wins was just one shy of the school record.

Sidney finished second in the final GWOC North standings, and had seven players in all named to the All-North team, three on the first, three on the second and one on the Special Mention list.

The list was led by senior Ben McClain, who like Davis was named to the All-GWOC team. The senior was Sidney’s leading scorer and tied for 10th in the GWOC in points with 12 goals and seven assists.

Also named to the first team are senior Chase Lorenzo and senior keeper Ben Snavley. Lorenzo had four assists this season and Snavley 74 assists and eight shutouts, third-best in the conference.

Second-team picks are senior Bradley Burden, senior Dakota Wenrich and junior Luke Rees. Rees had five goals and nine assists for the Jackets, and Wenrich had five goals and seven assists. Burden had three goals this season.

Junior Elliot Wilson was named to the Special Mention list.

Vandalia head coach Steve Doring shared coach of the year honors with Wicks, and Zach Burgmeier of Vandalia was the North Athlete of the Year.

Golf

Sidney had two boys named to the All-North golf team.

Senior Cole Cartwright was named to the second team and sophomore Jared Lindsey to the Special Mention list.

Cartwright had a 42.2 nine-hole average this season, eighth-best in the North, and Lindsey had a 45.6 average, 18th-best in the North.
