“Oliver!” is a stage adaptation of Charles Dickens’ novel Oliver Twist. The story is of a young orphan boy who starts his life in an orphan workhouse and is then sold as an apprentice to the local undertaker and his wife. He escapes from them and runs away to London where he meets the Artful Dodger, his fellow pickpocket gang, and their elderly criminal leader, Fagin.

Dickens writes an unromantic tale of the often sordid lives of these criminals and also focuses on the cruel and inhumane treatment of orphans during this time in London. It is a satire of the hypocrisies of Dickens’ time that included child labor, the recruitment of children as criminals and the inescapable truth of the life of street children. However, this age old story of good versus evil rewards us with a happy ending for Oliver as he is returned to his family and a better life than living on the street.
