Ohio’s jobless rate stable

SIDNEY — Ohio’s unemployment rate was 5.1 percent in March 2017, unchanged from February 2017.

The March unemployment rate for Ohio was up .1 percent from one year ago.

Unemployment was 4.1 percent in Shelby County in March, down from 4.6 percent in February, according to the latest data from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services Office of Workforce Development, Bureau of Labor Market Information.

The U.S. unemployment rate for March 2017 was 4.5 percent, 0.2 percentage point lower than in February, and 0.5 percentage point lower than in March 2016.

Among the state’s 88 counties, preliminary March 2017 unemployment rates ranged from a low of 3.0 percent in Mercer County to a high of 9.6 percent in Monroe County. The comparable unemployment rate for Ohio was 5.3 percent in March.

Other counties with unemployment rates under 4 percent in March were Union with 3.6 percent; Auglaize, Putnam and Wyandot, each with 3.7 percent; Madison with 3.8 percent; and Van Wert, Franklin and Warren, each with 3.9 percent. No county had an unemployment rates in March higher than Monroe County’s.

Surrounding counties’ unemployment rates for March (compared to the February rates) were as follows: Allen, 5.1 (down from 5.8); Auglaize, 3.7 (down from 4.2); Champaign, 4.0 (down from 4.6); Darke, 4.3 (down from 5.1); Logan, 4.2 (down from 4.7); Mercer, 3.0 (down from 3.7); and Miami, 4.3 (up from 5.0).
