July 20, 1892

Thomas K. Reynolds, of Indianapolis, superintendent of the division of the Big Four railroad, was here yesterday looking over property of that company, preparatory to making some improvements. A switch for the Valley City Milling Co. and one to be placed west of Highland avenue for the passenger trains to pass were the main objects of his visit. He also spoke encouragingly of improvements of the looks of the grounds around the depot by a lawn and flower bed.

The Sidney Steel Scraper Co. has shipped 25 wheel scrapers to South Africa this season. They are used in building railroads now in process of construction in that country.

Sidney Commandery of Knights Templar will run a Pullman sleeping car from Sidney to Denver, Colo. to accommodate all who may wish to visit that city during the triennial conclave of the Knights Templars. The car will leave Sidney on Aug. 5 and arrive in Denver Aug. 7.

100 Years

July 20, 1917

During the presentation of testimony in the case of the extension of Court street in the common pleas court this morning, the C.H. & D. railroad maintained the improvement is not necessary at this point, and wants the extension made at Poplar street, where, it is alleged, the cost will not be so great.

At the meeting of the incorporators and stockholders of the Sidney Power Press Co. yesterday, W.E. Whipp, of the Monarch Machine Co., was elected president; A.C. Getz, vice president; W.C. Horr, secretary, and E.H. Farrell, treasurer. The officers and I.H. Thedieck, L.M. Studevant, and A.J. Hess constitute the board of directors.

S.D. Crumbaugh, who conducted the Star restaurant on North Main avenue until he sold out recently, has purchased the John Kiser grocery and meat market on West Poplar street. Mr. Kiser will become associated with his father, E.D. Kiser, in the Kiser grocery and meat market on East Court street.

The great lottery through which the first to be called for the national army will be determined will be held tomorrow morning at 10 o’clock in Washington, D.C. it was announced today.

75 Years

July 20, 1942

With organization complete and more than 11,000 cards in their hands, hundreds of solicitors throughout the county awaited only the official opening of the War Chest drive at noon on Monday, in the countywide effort to raise $20,000 for various war appeals.

“On To Victory” will be the theme for the 82nd annual Shelby County Fair to be held Sept. 15-18, it was announced today as premium lists dedicated to “Agriculture’s contribution to our national defense,” became available. A.H. Tangeman is president of the fair board, with the other officers, W.F. Korn, vice president; Ben O. Harman, secretary, and Harry Evans, treasurer.

Three instructive sound motion pictures prepared by the Signal Corps of the United States Army will be shown tonight in the high school auditorium for enrollees in the civilian defense course for air raid wardens. In that these films contain information of general interest to the community, the public is invited to attend the showing.

A major tank battle which may decide the fate of Egypt, was being fought in the blazing desert wastes today over a 35-mile front.

50 Years

July 20, 1967

The appointment of Harold B. Botkin of St. Marys as assistant division engineer of Sidney Division Seven of the Ohio Department of Highways was announced today by Oliver M. Liggitt, division deputy director. Botkin succeeds James Andrews, 418 East Pinehurst St., Sidney, who was reassigned as a field engineer for the central office bureau of construction.

Shelby County delegates to the State 4-H conservation camp being held this week at Camp Ohio near Utica are Sonia Grieves of Botkins and Nick Abbott, R.R. 5, Sidney. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Grieves, Sonja is a member of the Cooking Chums 4-H club. Nick, son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Abbott, is a member of Thrifty Farmers. Both are junior leaders. Workshops in family living, forestry, water and land use and wildlife highlight the camp’s program.

VERSAILLES – The Knights of Columbus hall here was struck by fire at noon today. The blaze appeared to begin in the upper part of the structure on Pearl street just off West Main street, a spokesman said. Firemen were able to bring the fire under control shortly before 1 o’clock, with damage to the interior of the building expected to be extensive.

25 Years

July 20, 1992

The congregation of the Jackson Center Christ the King Church is excited. They are involved in a project to build a new sanctuary. All volunteer labor has been lined up. The church is at the corner of State Route 274 and Pasco-Montra Road outside Jackson Center. Pastor Michael Gross leads the flock. Pastor Gross commented, “We are not in any hurry. We will complete this project.”

City council chambers were jammed during the last meeting. Dozens of residents showed up. Their homes were flooded both on the north end and south end of Sidney due to the monsoon-type rain the community experienced. The residents were upset they did not have enough notice of the flood and they thought the City failed in its duty to protect them. Many will be filing claims.
