Well, this week starts Deer Gun Season! If you’re interested in learning how to dress that deer you get, OSU Extension in Champaign County is hosting a deer processing workshop, Dec. 4 at the Graham High School kitchen in St. Paris. This program begins at 6 p.m., is free, and will have refreshments! Here you will learn how to skin, process, store and prepare venison in the home kitchen. Please contact Amanda Douridas by Thursday, Nov. 29, if you want to attend: 937-484-1526 or email at [email protected].

Amanda is also hosting a Coyote Calling Workshop, Dec. 12, at the Community Center on South U.S. Route 68 in Urbana. Once again, this begins at 6 p.m., also has refreshments and is free. Here you will learn about coyote calling techniques, types of calls, habitat and trap setting. The RSVP date for this program is Dec. 7. Once again, you can call Amanda or send her an email.

The annual Ohio No-Till Conference will be Dec. 11 at the Der Dutchman Restaurant in Plain City. The program starts at 9 a.m. and runs until 4 p.m. Topics to be addressed include Nutrient Application in No-Till; Carbon, Nitrogen and Phosphorus Cycles; Deep Placement of Fertilizer with Strip-till; Cover Crops and Timing; Conservation Benefits for Landowners; Digital Agricultural Apps; and more. The cost for this program is $40. To register and pay go to https://ohionotillcouncil.com/.

An Inversion and Drift Management Workshop will be presented by the Ohio State University Extension IPM program, Dec. 14 from 10 a.m. to noon. Farmers and pesticide applicators can attend this workshop in-person at the Ohio Department of Agriculture, 8995 E. Main St. in Reynoldsburg or attend the meeting by computer at go.osu.edu/IPM.

Leading off the workshop will be Aaron Wilson, weather specialist and atmospheric scientist with OSU Extension and the Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center. Wilson will focus on weather conditions that cause inversions and provide useful measures and observation to help determine if inversions are happening. He will also look at average growing years and the days available for herbicide applications that avoided inversion or wind concerns.

Jared Shaffer, plant health inspector with the ODA, will speak on FieldWatch, the sensitive crop registry available to Ohio farmers and used throughout the Midwest. Shaffer will showcase tools available for farmers with sensitive crops to communicate about the location of their crops, as well as detail techniques available to applicators to find real-time information about crops in the area and how this information can be used in their spray planning.

There is no cost for the workshop; however, advance registration is required to attend in-person at the Reynoldsburg location and attendance at that location is limited to 75 registrants. You can register online at go.osu.edu/IPM. Commercial and Private Pesticide Applicator recertification credits for CORE will be available at the Reynoldsburg location. No recertification credits are available for online participants. For information about the workshop, contact Cindy Folck at 614-247-7898 or [email protected].

And, speaking of pesticide credits: 2019 West Ohio Agronomy Day will be Jan. 14 at St. Michael’s Hall in Fort Loramie. I have the Commercial Pesticide Applicator Recertification Credits in CORE, 2A, and 2C confirmed, as well as the Private Pesticide Applicator Recertification Credits in CORE and Categories 1, 2, and 6. The one-hour Fertilizer Applicator Recertification Training will also be available. We’ve got CEUs for CCAs and a whole lot of food, fun, fellowship, and LOTS of information planned!

Yes, you’ll be hearing more about this as the date creeps nearer! Sponsorships for this wonderful event are already coming in: New Ag Horizons/Mark Eilerman, independent crop consultant from Minster; Shelby County Farm Bureau; AG Boogher & Son, Inc., retailer of agricultural chemicals, seed and fertilizer from the Wapakoneta/Santa Fe area; and Farm Credit, Mid-America from Versailles. Thank you much!!
