SIDNEY — More than 120 athletes participated in the Shelby County Special Olympics Saturday, April 29, at Sidney Middle School. There were 150 volunteers assisting with the event, along with 250 caregivers and fans who were rooting for all the athletes.

Mark Harrod opened the ceremonies with a welcome to all those in attendance. The Olympic parade included all the athletes and their chaperons.

Maliyah Pleasant and Seth Underwood carried the Olympic banner. The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Honor Guard raised the American flag. The “Star Spangled Banner” was performed by Ronald Leong and Dean Jones. The Rev. Jonathan Schriber gave the invocation.

Calvin Cooley said the Olympics oath and officially opened the games. The announcer for the day was Shelby County Commissioner Robert Guillozet. The awards were presented by Sidney Police Officer Mike McRill and Chris A. Gates, senior chief, U.S. Navy, retired.
