Nov. 11, 1915

At their regular meeting last evening, members of city council instructed the city solicitor to prepare the necessary legislation to proceed with the improvements on Court Street and Main Avenue approved by the voters of the city at the election last Tuesday. The city engineer was also instructed to draw up the necessary plans to determine the amount of ground that would be required to make the proper turn at the intersection of Chestnut Avenue and Fair Avenue.

The home of Mrs. Elizabeth Barkalow, in Orange Township, south of Sidney, was totally destroyed by fire about noon today. The house was an old two story structure. The flames were discovered while the occupants were at the dinner table. Some of the household goods downstairs were saved, but everything upstairs was destroyed. Mrs. Barkalow is 92 years of age.

Boy Scouts of Shelby County will hold an Armistice Day rally Monday in the Pemberton School. Troops from Sidney, Jackson Center, Pemberton, Anna and Botkins will take part in the special program to which parents are invited. William A. Trimpe of Sidney will be the guest speaker.

Holy Angels Titans dropped their opening basketball game of the season last night, when Perry High School, paced by Bodenmiller with four points, trounced the locals 12 to 4 at Pemberton.

Nov. 11, 1965

Open house for Fort Loramie’s new Die Company will be held November 14 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the plant on State Route 702 at the south edge of the village. Partners Vernon Vandenbrock of Dayton, Melvin Puthoff of Fort Loramie and Paul Perin, have invited the public to tour the building constructed of steel. At present, there are 37 employees.

Newly-elected officers of Temperance Lodge 73, F & AM, will be installed December 2 at the Masonic Temple in Sidney. Recently elected were Donald W. Starrett, R.R. 3, Sidney, as worshipful master; Ronald L. Laughlin, senior warden; Forest Friend, junior warden; Ralph Scanlin, secretary; John Foster, treasurer; Roger N. Snider, senior deacon; Raymond E. Boller III, junior deacon; and William Stamm, tyler. Emerson Setsor, outgoing master, was elected trustee of the lodge for a three year term.

There is a new business in Jackson Center. Housewife Brenda Opperman was asked to participate in a craft show. Those attending liked her hand-made sweat shirts so much she decided to go into business for herself. She has already sold over 50 of them in three weeks. Her shirts feature her own designs sewn into the sweat shirt.

The Noon Optimist Club Teen of the Month is Michael Rhee. He is the son of Dr. Myong Rhee of Sidney. The younger Rhee carries a 4.0 GPA at Lehman High School. He will study engineering in college. Rhee is considering MIT, that “school up north” or Carnegie Mellon.
