Get wild about saving lives blood drives planned

DAYTON — Do something wild this summer! Exploring Alaska is a must on your bucket list, and in your wildest dreams nothing can top saving a life. Anyone who registers to give blood during the Community Blood Center May 2 through Sept. 3 “Wild About Alaska Adventure for Two” Summer Blood Drive will get the chance to save lives and perhaps win the adventure of a lifetime.

A custom-designed Alaskan vacation for two is the grand prize in the “Wild About Alaska” campaign. It includes air travel to Alaska, deluxe accommodations during your week-long stay, and options that may include cruise and land travel combinations. The vacation is for the winning donor and a travel companion.

Everyone age 18 and older who registers to donate with CBC from May 2 through Sept. 3 will be automatically entered in the drawing to win the Alaska vacation for two. Eligible donors can enter the drawing a second time when they register for a second donation during the blood drive period. Donors are encouraged to schedule an appointment online at www.DonorTime.com.

The summer blood drive kicks off with a “Double Klondike Run” celebration of free Klondike ice cream bars and candy for everyone who registers to donate at the Dayton CBC or Springfield CBC Donor Centers Monday, May 2, through Friday, May 6.

Donors can enjoy a Klondike bar in the Donor Café and take home a Klondike candy treat as a reminder to enter the “Wild About Alaska” drawing twice by donating blood a second time during the summer.

Anyone who registers to donate during the campaign will receive a special-edition, “Wild About Alaska” T-shirt. CBC will offer three different designs during the 18-week campaign.

The first phase of the summer campaign features the “Wild About Blood Donors” orange T-shirt with grizzly bear design. The T-shirt is free to everyone who registers to donate May 2 through June 11 at any CBC Donor Center and most CBC mobile blood drives.

CBC’s goals during the first stage of the campaign are to welcome new donors; remind regular donors to donate before summer gets busy; and to remind everyone to donate early so they will be eligible to donate again and be entered in the drawing a second time. Two is the maximum number of entries.

REACH magazine is media sponsor of the “Wild About Alaska Blood Drive” and The Flowerman is the fresh flower sponsor. The value of the trip is $8,000 and the winning donor has the option to transfer the prize to another couple. Official rules will be posted May 2 at www.givingblood.org.

CBC especially encourages blood donations during the summer months when high schools on summer break, family vacations and outdoor activities can disrupt donation schedules and challenge the regional blood supply.

In addition, CBC is taking cautions against the Zika virus. Potential donors who have traveled to Zika endemic areas in the Caribbean, Mexico and Central or South America are deferred from donating for 28 days. The restriction is expected to decrease the number of eligible donors by approximately 2.25 percent.
