A cask of gin arrived yesterday for William Shine from the Juniper gin distillery of John DeKeuper and Sons, Rotterdam, Holland. The freight and insurance were $12.40 and duty under the Dingley law was $41.

Nelson Ague has opened the Yenney Building at the corner of Main Avenue and North Street.

100 Years

March 29, 1923

At the regular meeting of city council last evening, the West Court Street extension was discussed at some length. It was announced that a meeting will be held tomorrow evening at the mayor’s office with two engineers from Columbus and another from Toledo, to discuss the matter further. A petition to open Enterprise Street from its south end to Thompson Street was referred to the street and alley committee.

Edward Collins, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Collins, narrowly escaped serious injury this morning, when he was thrown from the truck of Carl Kiser’s grocery, operated by Roy Stockstill. Collins, a freshman, was on his way to school, riding on the running board of the truck. As the vehicle rounded the corner at North and Miami, he was thrown off onto the pavement. He fortunately escaped with only a few bruises and scratches.

75 Years

March 29, 1948

Approximately 5,000 motor vehicle licenses of all types have been sold at the Shelby County Motor Club since sales opened on March 1 Charles Seving, deputy registrar and club secretary, disclosed today. The overall figure include 3,600 passenger car tags, Seving pointed out, noting he expects additional sales of 1,400 tags for cars.

Announcement is being made by Mr. and Mrs. Burton Miars of Jackson Center, that they have purchased the grocery and residence in Port Jefferson formerly owned by Mr. and Mrs. Rover Rich. This is the oldest grocery in Port Jefferson and was owned and operated by Mrs. Helena Hussey for nearly 40 years.

March 29, 1973

NEW BREMEN – At a special congregational meeting Sunday, members of Zion United Church of Christ voted to build a new church here.

The existing church building was erected in 1896 and remodeled 25 years ago. To build a new church, an extensive remodeling of the present edificie, or to patch and repair the present church were the three avenues of approach presented to the members. After discussion, 78 per cent of members present voted to building a new church.

Jackson Center’s Jeff Reese has a achieved a top post-season honor in basketball. He has been selected as the co-Division IV Player of the Year in Ohio. He led Jackson Center to the No. 1 state ranking all year long and a run-away Shelby County League championship. He led the team in scoring, assists and rebounds.

Well-known Sidney police officer Chuck Shepherd can finally add ‘retired’ to his resume. Shepherd has worked many positions in law enforcement over his career. He was an undercover narcotics agent in Middletown and elsewhere where he parties with drug users grew his hair long and nabbed offenders. He has also focused on crime prevention and bad checks along with fraud claims. He of course has been a patrol officer in Sidney. He plans to specialize on playing golf.
