May 6, 1916

Although one of the most recent additions to the industrial interests of Sidney, the Monarch Machine Tool Co. has developed into one of the best. Another new addition has been erected, just south of the old plant. This marks the fourth addition to the manufacturing facilities of the company, bringing the total floor space up to 50,000 square feet. At the present time the plant is giving employment to 165 workmen.

While excavating for his new home at the corner of Ohio avenue and Pike street yesterday, Wilson Carothers found a large copper penny, the date of which was 1842. The penny was laid in the mortar between two stones in the southeast corner of the foundation. It was apparently placed there as a cornerstone, indicating the year the house was built by Mark Thompson.

75 Years

May 6, 1941

Eugene C. Linker, mayor of Anna, was named chairman of the district advisory council for the Shelby County Board of Health at a meeting last evening. C. L. Buirley, mayor Jackson Center, was named vice chairman, and W. N. Dinsmore, chairman of trustees of Salem township, was named secretary. The advisory council is composed of the mayors of incorporated villages and the chairmen of the boards of trustees of all the townships in the county. At the same meeting, Willis Ailes, of Anna, was elected to the board of health to succeed O.F. Wren, of Jackson Center.

Members of the senior class at Sidney High School will present their annual operetta in the school auditorium tomorrow evening. Leads will be played by Rainy Johnston, Virginia Stump, June Seving, Eleanor Lee, Dorothy Schrolucke, Peggy Young, Caryl Whited, Chester Kennett, Dick Russell, Wilbur Williams, Hubert Smith, Ellis Runyon, Kenneth Ferree.

50 Years

May 6, 1966

Robert Pearson of 602 South Ohio avenue is the newly elected president of the Sidney Lodge of the Fraternal Order of Eagles. He is a long-time employee of the Monarch Machine Tool Co. and has been active in amateur baseball in Sidney for many years.

Officers elected to serve with Pearson include, junior past president, William Johnston; vice president, Norman Shade; chaplain, Calvin Rowland; secretary, Talmadge Raley; treasurer, Harold Glass; conductor, Marion Elsner; inside guard, Tom Davis; outside guard, Danny Grow, and trustees, Clarence Hancock, Carl Looker and Ralph Briggs.

Plans for the sale of a part of the assets of the Sidney Grain Machinery Co., North Main avenue, to Herman Baker, R.R. 3, Sidney, were revealed today. Baker, who has been an employee of the firm for 20 years in various capacities, principally as a designer and seller, plans to form a new company to continue operations.

This new firm will be known as Sidney Grain Machine, Inc., and Baker expects to employ most of the old employees of the former company.

May 6, 1991

Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Amos, 504 Uhle Place, will serve as grand marshals for the 1991 MayFest parade slated to last about 90 minutes. Amos is chairman of the board emeritus of Amos Press Inc. Along with his wife, Margaret “Peg’, they have been active in community activities. Amos Press is parent company of The Sidney Daily News which is the sponsor of this year’s parade.

London (AP) – Queen Elizabeth II and her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, later this month will make their first official visit to the United States since 1983, Buckingham Palace said today.

They will fly in a Concorde jet May 14 to Washington D.C.

Two days later, the queen will address a joint session of Congress.
