August 1, 1891
At a meeting of the Wooster Whip factory last evening, all the directors of the company resigned and a new board was elected. Three officers are residents of Wooster, but will move to Sidney. Jacob Piper was elected a director, which will give a majority of the board in Sidney.
100 Years
August 1, 1916
Mr. Justice, agent for the Big Four railroad, notified the Merchants Excursion committee at noon today, that his company had advised him that they have arranged to handle 1,000 people from Sidney on Thursday for the trip to Cedar Point. The Big Four plans to have a train of 12 coaches for the trip.
75 Years
August 1, 1941
The Monarch Lathes ruled today as softball champions of Shelby County after they defeated the Pemberton Reds 4 to 3 in the finals at Jackson Center last night. Del Drake, Monarch first sacker, led the winner’s attach with two home runs.

August 1, 1966
ST. PARIS – Carl W. Calland, 67, of R.R. 1, St. Paris, manager of Kiser Lake State Park for the past 25 years, died at 1:20 p.m. Monday at Piqua Memorial Hospital. He had celebrated the 25th anniversary of his employment at Kiser Lake May 30 of this year.

Kathleen Flinn and Tom Archer were crowned Junior Fair queen and king at Monday night’s youth program at the Shelby County Fair. Named first runner-ups were Mary Ellen Barhorst and Bill Hoewischer. Second runner-ups were Sally Cummings and Steve Knouff.

Remodeling is continuing to the Frisch’s Big Boy Restaurant on Wapakoneta Avenue. The restaurant is closed for a few weeks while the interior is gutted and then updated with increased seating.

Seventy Shelby County youngsters, in the fourth through eighth grade, are participating in the Sidney-Shelby County YMCA’s fifth annual four-day basketball camp. Area head high school basketball coaches volunteering their time to conduct the camp are John Willoughby, Houston, his fifth year at the camp; Tom Reed, Jackson Center; Tom Burgel, Lehman, and Tom Clark, Sidney. Also helping are Sidney High School assistant basketball coaches Larry Morris and Paul Hohlbein.
