There is a car commercial that seems to be shown quite frequently. The song is a slightly modified version of a song by Lesley Gore, “You Don’t Own Me.” Here are the lyrics:
“You don’t own me
Don’t try to change me in any way
You don’t own me
Don’t tie me down ‘cause I’ll never stay
Don’t tell me what to do
Don’t tell me what to say
Just let me be myself
That’s all I ask of you
I’m young and I love to be young
I’m free and I love to be free
To live my life the way I want
To say and do whatever I please”
We’ve just come through an incredibly difficult election process that is still being debated by many. There are many protests still being held because of disagreements with both the election process and the outcome of the election. The song and sentiment of the commercial seems to be almost an anthem for many that want to be true only to themselves and their own beliefs. Comments about the commercial say that this song and its sentiment are very empowering.
Many people look at the condition of the world at large and at this country’s debates and problems and declare that the 2nd coming of Christ has to be coming soon.
We have just entered, once again, into that time in the Christian year when we are living and celebrating the birth of our Lord Jesus and are anticipating His return known as the season of Advent.
In 1 Corinthians 6: 19-20a we read, ”Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own; you were bought at a price.”
With that scripture in mind, think about how things could be different with a slight change in wording and a pretty monumental change in meaning:
“You so own me
Please make your changes in me today
You so own me
I’m not tied down, ‘cause you are The Way
Please tell me what to do
Please tell me what to say
I’m lost when I’m myself
I know that I need you
I’m yours and I love to be yours
I’m free, you died so I could be free
To live my life the way you want
To say and do, whatever you please
You so own me….”
May we enter into this time of Advent with renewed Hope for our world and the coming year; increased Love for each other and for our Lord, Jesus Christ; excitement, wonder and Joy in life itself and God’s wonderful creation and let us each work toward Peace on Earth, letting the peace of Christ rule in our hearts since as members of one body we have been called to Peace.
