SIDNEY — The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office recently completed its 2017 DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) Summer Youth Camp.

Under the direction of Shelby County Sheriff John Lenhart, the DARE officer and several school resource officers greeted 144 fifth- and sixth-grade students from the Anna, Botkins, Jackson Center, Fairlawn, Fort Loramie, Hardin-Houston, Russia, Holy Angels and Sidney Christian Academy school districts.

Each DARE camp comprised several nine-hour days over a period of three weeks during the month of June. While at the camp, the students received instruction in health facts and health effects of alcohol, tobacco and drug use; resistance strategies; good decision-making; good citizenship; alternatives to alcohol and drug use; bicycle safety; water, boating and fishing safety and developing personal help networks.

The sheriff’s office was assisted by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Shelby County Soil and Water Conservation and the Shelby County Historical Society.
