SHS class of ‘49 meets

SIDNEY — The Sidney High School class of 1949 reunited July 19 in the Sidney American Legion hall for the 69th anniversary of its graduation.

John Laws, of Sidney, led the group in prayer as lunch was served. Notes and phone messages from classmates unable to attend were read.

Jinny Shreves, of Sidney, announced the names of this year’s recipients of the Class of 1949 Scholarships: Gavin Miller, a 2018 Sidney High graduate, plans to attend Ohio State University to study architecture. Erin Ivy, studies biology at Ohio State and plans to become an optometrist.

Two classmates entertained by speaking about their college years at Miami University and playing football in the early 1950s. They played under a young Woody Hayes and Ara Parseghian, as well as Wayne Gibson, who earlier had been on the coaching staff of Sidney High.

Barhorst, Lois (Sullenberger) Schmidt, Phil Ruese, Roy Bulle, Beverly (Baker) Patrick, Patsy (Sargent) Maxwell, Phyllis (Wiessinger) Piper, Norma (Wells) Schlagetter and Jinny (Moon) Shreves, all of Sidney; Al and Shirley Ward, of Galion, Wilbur Molitor, of Russells Point; Ray Cotterman, of Beaufort, North Carolina; Larry Hawkins, of National City, Michigan; Herb and Ada Fogt, of Troy; Bernard and Phyllis (Clayton) Clinehans, of Maplewood; Betty (Cole) Ludwig, of Farmland, Indiana; Wayne Davis, of Powell; and special guest Linda Goodwin, of Cedar Island, North Carolina.

The reunion commitee were Shreves, Maxwell, Piper and Schlagetter. They have set July 18, 2019, as the date for the class’s 70th anniversary celebration.
