LIMA — Girl Scouts of Western Ohio on Thursday held an open house and dedication ceremony for improvements made to Camp Woodhaven in Lima.
“This day is really a culmination of over a year of work in doing renovations on this facility,” said Lissa Brown, director of regional services, explaining the facility serves 68 girls a day. “This facility was donated in the 1950s and has stood pretty much the same since then and girls needs are changing. We wanted to make sure that this space that was primitive before is cream of the crop and we want to make sure we’re giving the girls who are in greater Lima the best facility possible for a camp experience.”
An estimated $1 million in improvements were made to the facilities, including wi-fi and new landscaping.
“We added additional bunk rooms and an air-conditioned lodge, which our girls are really excited about. Also, Sweetbrier Lodge that’s right behind here, it was both too hot during the summer and too cold during the winter so we made sure that the climate control was more conducive to what our girls and what our troop leaders were looking for. We redid a lot of the floors and one thing we’re really excited about is our historical activities center, formerly it was a museum. The girls felt it was really hands-off, they couldn’t touch it, now they actually can do activities and really immerse themselves really in the history of Girl Scouting,” she said.
Also added was a new playground facility, a new GaGa pit, a program barn and a new archery range.
“So really just more space for the girls to spread out and enjoy the outdoors,” she said.
Funding for the improvements came when the Girl Scouts sold a campground near Bellefontaine.
