His book, “Living With Parkinson’s,” documents his experience with Parkinson’s disease and is filled with suggestions that will help the reader cope with the disease over a long period of time. It is meant to share one family’s experience with the disease.

Zimmerman earned his doctorate in special education from the University of Cincinnati. He was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 1988, when he was 42 years old. He was the superintendent of Shelby County Board of Mental Retardation at that time. He retired in 2004 and has spent his retirement volunteering at the local hospital and for various other organizations. He has been trained as a research advocate for the Parkinson’s Foundation.
