Scouts cookie rally set for Jan. 2

SIDNEY — Daisy, Brownie and Girl Scouts of all ages will rally to open their annual cookie sales at a social event, Jan. 2, at Rolling Hills Skate, 105 W. Russell Road.

All scouts in Shelby County are invited to participate in the rally from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Scouts who are at the Brownie level or older may also attend an overnight party, which will begin immediately following the rally.

Thanks to a grant from the Shelby County United Way, admission to the rally is free; however, girls are asked to donate one canned food item or one toiletry or hat or glove item. The food will be given to Agape Distribution. The toiletries and outwear items will be given to the Sidney First United Methodist Church for distribution at its new warming center.

Admission to the overnight party is $5 per girl.

“Girls do not have to register to attend the rally,” said Christy Hughes, a troop leader and the event coordinator. “We appreciate it if they register early for the overnight, but they can do so on the day of, if they want to.” To register in advance for the overnight, email Hughes at [email protected].

Hughes anticipates that about 100 girls will attend the rally and 25 to 50 will stay overnight.

At the rally, in addition to skating, there will be face painting and visits with characters from the movie, “Frozen,” compliments of the Sidney Dance Company. Some company members will do the face painting and others will be in costume as the fictional characters.

During the overnight party, girls will enjoy skating, pizza and soda. There will be doughnuts and juice in the morning. The overnight will end at 7 a.m., Jan. 3.

“We’ll do some scout activities. They’ll be building relationships and their sisterhood,” Hughes said. Troop leaders, registered parent volunteers and skating rink staff will serve as chaperones.

Girls who participate will receive patches, which have been donated by Rolling Hills Skate.

Scouts will begin taking orders for their popular cookies on Jan. 8. Delivery will be in February. Booth sales will run through March and April.
