SIDNEY—Ashley Himes State Farm Insurance and team will be sponsoring the second annual “Good Neighbor Day” at the Sidney Auto-vue Drive-In on Sunday, Sept. 1. Gates open at 6 p.m. and “Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse” will be shown at 8:45 p.m.

National Good Neighbor Day was created in the early 1970s by Becky Mattson of Lakeside, Montana. While Good Neighbor Day is officially observed on Sept. 28, State Farm has an initiative to encourage everyone to lend a hand in their community. This was the catalyst that inspired Ashley Himes and her team to bring that positivity to Sidney.

“We wanted to bring that into the community,” Ashley Himes said. “Last year everyone had a really great time, and we got great compliments from the community. We wanted to go bigger this year.”

Last year, 900 people attended Good Neighbor Day. This year, Himes and her team anticipate 1,500 attendees.

In addition to showing a movie, there will be four inflatable bouncy houses, face painting, tattoos, a DJ booth, and competitions for children and other attendees to participate in. There will also be free hot dogs, popcorn and water. Everyone who attends will receive a gift of their choice between a chip clip, can cozy, or drinking cup.

At the end of the day, Himes’ goal is to serve a reminder of what it means to be a good neighbor.

“Sometimes you just want to do something good for the community or the people around you just to bless them and this is my thing,” Himes said.

The event is free and open to the public, but attendees are advised to bring money if they want to purchase items from the concession stand.
