New York man sentenced

CELINA — The man responsible for the death of a Sidney man in a crash on Jan. 2, 2022,was sentenced Friday morning in Mercer County Common Pleas Court.

Adil Sabanagic, 65, of Utica, New York, was sentenced to 30 days in the Mercer County Jail. He will also serve 60 days of house arrest at his home in Utica, New York. He will be required to have electronic monitoring. He was also fined $2,500 and must pay court costs. His license was suspended for a minimum of three years.

He had pleaded guilty to one county of aggravated vehicular homicide in October. the negotiated plea agreement included the dismissal of six misdemeanor charges.

Sabanagic was driving a semitractor trailer on state Route 29 at the time of the crash. He was attempting to make a turn onto Harris Road which he missed the intersection. He began backing up when a vehicle driven by Atsushi Tanaka, Sidney, struck the back of the semitractor trailer which was blocking part of the road.

Tanaka’s vehicle traveled off the north side of the road, down a ditch, through a fence and came to rest in a pond, where it became submerged.

Tanaka was pronounced dead at the scene after the Celina Fire Department dive team was able to pull the vehicle from the pond.
