May 11, 1916

The Wapakoneta pike will be paved with brick from the north corporation line to the Russell pike. The paving will be 20 feet wide. The additional cost over macadam is to be paid by the abutting property owners. County Engineer Maurer and Harry Bennett secured approval of the project on this basis when they were in Columbus yesterday.

While endeavoring to separate two dogs fighting in the court house yard this afternoon, Jack Hennessey was bitten on the left leg by one of the dogs, and Miss Bertie Harshbarger was bitten on the right wrist. They were immediately given treatment at Dr. Hubbell’s office.

75 Years

May 11, 1941

The retirement of Dr. E.H. Montgomery as superintendent of the Ohio Presbyterian Home was announced during the annual meeting of the board of trustees held yesterday at the home here. Dr. Harry Barr, pastor of the first Presbyterian church at Urbana, was named to succeed him as superintendent. Dr. Montgomery has served as manager of the home and secretary of the board of trustees for 12 years. The change becomes effective June 1.

Miss Myrtle Whited, of the city, a medical missionary in China for the past 13 years, has arrived back in this country. A telegram to Mr. and Mrs. Frank Cowan stated that she landed in San Francisco today. She plans to come to Sidney for a visit with relatives and friends.

The Sidney High school doubles team of Bob Donkelaar and Don Barr won the Miami Valley League doubles championship at Miamisburg yesterday afternoon.

50 Years

May 11, 1966

Mrs. Clarence Piper entertained members of the Tinker Belles Garden Club for the May meeting.

New officers elected were Mrs. Robert Persinger, president; Mrs. Cable Pepper, vice president; Mrs. Wayne Ailes, program chairman, and Ms. Damion Spicer, secretary and treasurer.

SPRINGFIELD – Gov. James A. Rhodes received an award Wednesday night from the Springfield Chapter of Frontiers International for his “contributions toward human dignity and brotherhood.”

25 Years

May 11, 1991

Members of the U.S. Army Reserve 656th Transportation Company, including five area residents, returned to their Springfield base Tuesday afternoon. Hundreds of relatives and friends cheered as the three chartered buses arrived from Fort McCoy, Wis.

Local members of the unit, who were deployed to Saudi Arabia as part of the multi-national Operation Desert Storm forces, include Spc. Robert Roe II, 9109 Johnston-Slagle Road; Sgt. Charles E. White Jr., 810 Lynn St.; Spc. Dawn White, 1105 Hamilton Court; Spc Anthony R. Sanders, 431 Rushcreek Road, and Spc, Christopher M. Pellman of Quincy.

Bridget K. Oen, 12340 Botkins Road, Botkins, has been chosen Sidney Optimist Club Teen-ager of the Month.

Miss Oen, 18, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Myron Oen and is a senior at Botkins High School. She has a 3.91 grade point average, won first place in the county in the Shelby County Alcoholism Council and The Sidney Daily News alcoholism essay contest and placed in the top 25 in the state in The Ohio By-Lines Writing Contest.
