Learning about the outdoors

Tuesday kicked off the three-day Conservation Day Camp, which is held at the Shelby County Fish & Game Club. The theme for the week is “Minecraft exploring conservation.” On Tuesday, the participants learned about archery, composting (using ice cream, Oreo crumbs and gummy worms), watercraft safet, played giant Jenga to learn about the different types of resources (renewable resources, green energy and nonrenewable resources) and made tie-dye shirts. Wednesday’s programs include advanced archer, paint and sip, leadership craft, you are what you eat and corn and more. Thursday’s activities include fishing, plants, from field to table and trail exploration. Sam Norman, Ohio Beef ambassador, will also give a presentation. The camp is sponsored by Shelby Soil & Water Conservation District and the Shelby County Farm Bureau.

Brodie Nishwitz takes a green piece out of the giant Jenga game at the Conservation Day Day. The green signifiies green energy, such as wind power, solar power and geothermal power. The tan blocks are renewable resources such as plants and trees. The black blocks are nonrenewable resources such as coal and oil.
